GOOD FORTUNE TO CLOSE FOR 3 MONTHS IN WHEATON (PHOTO)

Popular Chinese restaurant Good Fortune, at 2646 University Boulevard in Wheaton, will close this Wednesday, April 30. The restaurant has been sold. Sources tell me the new owner will close for about 3 months, to renovate and update the interior. At this point, word is the new restaurant will retain its specialty as a dim sum destination.

TRANSFORMER FAILURE CAUSES POWER OUTAGES IN SILVER SPRING, ASPEN HILL

A transformer failure has knocked out power to a handful of Pepco customers in the vicinity of 2nd Avenue and Cameron Street in downtown Silver Spring. Pepco estimates power will be restored by 4:00 AM.

Several customers are also in the dark in Aspen Hill, in a neighborhood off of Arctic Avenue. That outage has a 3:00 AM restoration time, according to Pepco.

CARROLL KNOLLS LOCAL PARK TO OPEN THIS SATURDAY IN SILVER SPRING

Silver Spring's newest park, Carroll Knolls Local Park, will open this Saturday morning, April 26, at 10:45 A.M. The park is located at 10500 Georgia Avenue, near Evans Parkway, and features wooded areas, a meadow and picnic benches. Later a natural surface trail will be added.

FULL ON CRAFT EATS & DRINKS TO OPEN ON NORBECK ROAD (PHOTO)

A new gourmet sandwich shop will open on Norbeck Road (just north of Leisure World) early this summer. Full On Craft Eats & Drinks will also feature craft beer and wine, at 4007-D Norbeck Road - which is Rockville according to the U.S. Postal Service. But so close to Aspen Hill and Glenmont, that one might consider it Silver Spring, as well. You decide!

What's not up for debate, is Full On's promise not to use preservatives, chemicals or stabilizers in its food. All meats are processed and roasted in-house, not from a factory. And every sandwich will be made to order. Also prepared daily, will be soup, as well as salads made fresh-to-order.

Sandwiches will include Turkey & Cranberry, Ham and Eggs (with egg salad), Crabcake Grilled Cheese, and the Greek Salad Sandwich with smashed chickpeas, greek olives, sliced cucumber, banana peppers, tomato, red onion, and feta cheese, with oil & vinegar.

EL FOGON DE WHEATON TO TAKE OVER FORMER IRENE'S ON GEORGIA AVENUE

The former home of Irene's Pupusas, at 11300 Georgia Avenue in Wheaton, is getting a new restaurant and lounge tenant. El Fogón de Wheaton will soon open in the space, convenient to the Metro Red Line Wheaton station. The latest venture from the folks behind the Latin hotspot Parva Lounge in Bethesda, El Fogón will serve Tex-Mex and Latin American cuisine. In addition to the dining and nightlife El Fogón aims to bring to Wheaton, they will also specialize in hosting large events, such as wedding receptions and quinceañera celebrations.

GREEN FORUM WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT SILVER SPRING CIVIC BUILDING, 7:00 PM

Today is Earth Day. But Wednesday night (April 23) in Silver Spring, you can find out what Montgomery County candidates have to say about environmental issues, at a Green Forum sponsored by Conservation Montgomery. The forum will be moderated by ABC 7 weekend morning anchor Kathy Park, and include all candidates running for County Executive and County Council.

Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions via index cards. The event is free, but registration will guarantee you a seat, and a chance to submit your question(s) early for the candidates online. Registration is not required, however.

The forum will be held from 7:00-9:00 PM at the Silver Spring Civic Building. Parking is available in the public garage directly across Ellsworth Drive from the building.

POWER OUTAGES IN ASPEN HILL, SILVER SPRING, BURNT MILLS HILLS

Several Pepco customers are without power in Aspen Hill, primarily in the English Manor area. Those outages are expected to be restored within the hour, according to Pepco.

A much larger outage in the Woodside Park area of Silver Spring has about 300 customers in the dark, and is expected to be fixed by 10:00 PM tonight. One around Mansfield Road could be out until 11:00 PM, Pepco says.

Alas, those in the Burnt Mills Hills area of White Oak may have to wait until 2:00 AM for power.

3 INJURED IN FIERY ASPEN HILL AUTO ACCIDENT THIS MORNING

Two adults and one child suffered traumatic injuries in a crash at Aspen Hill Road and Parkland Drive, around 1:00 AM this morning. One vehicle was in flames when Montgomery County Fire and Rescue arrived on scene, according to Public Information Officer Pete Piringer. The vehicle fire was extinguished, and the 3 victims have been hospitalized. Their condition is unknown.

There may be traffic delays in the area, so consider alternate routes.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK IN WHITE OAK

A pedestrian was struck on Lockwood Drive in White Oak around 3:20 PM this afternoon. The victim, and a possibly related second injured person, are being evaluated and treated on scene. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Public Information Officer Pete Piringer says Montgomery County Police are now investigating the incident.

HOUSE FIRE ON NEW HAMPSHIRE AVENUE IN SILVER SPRING

A fire in the basement of a home in the 15400 block of New Hampshire Avenue has evacuated residents, and may cause traffic delays in that corridor.

The fire is located in the utility/laundry room of the basement, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service Public Information Officer Pete Piringer. There are no reports of injury at this point.

FIRE AT SUMMIT HILLS APARTMENTS IN SILVER SPRING

A kitchen fire in a unit at the Summit Hills Apartments was responded to late Thursday evening by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue. Firefighters managed to put the fire out in short order, although smoke was still an issue. No injuries resulted, according to MCFRS Public Information Officer Pete Piringer. The building is located at 8504 16th Street, on the edge of downtown Silver Spring.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK ON ELLSWORTH DRIVE IN SILVER SPRING

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue is on the scene of an accident involving a pedestrian in the 500 block of Ellsworth Drive, in downtown Silver Spring. The pedestrian was struck near Dale Drive, and is being evaluated by EMTs on-scene.

Heads up if you park a car in downtown Silver Spring: There appears to be a continued spike in auto break-ins in the downtown area. This is the third day of such reports. Remember to lock your doors, and remove all valuables from the cabin of the vehicle. Otherwise, it was a far lighter day than usual in crime reporting from East MoCo.
