Montgomery County executive appears maskless in Montgomery College classroom

Montgomery County has been under an indoor mask order for several weeks. When County Executive Marc Elrich (D) was caught on camera without a mask in a classroom at Montgomery College on Monday, his critics pounced, calling it hypocrisy. Elrich was attending a "5G Bootcamp" at the community college with Congressman David Trone (D - 6th District).

Trone posted several photos of the event on Twitter. In all but one, Elrich is wearing a mask. But in the maskless photo, everyone but Elrich in the classroom is wearing a mask. "Rules for thee, and not for me," tweeted @justhefactsmo1, sharing Trone's tweet. "What's the ticket for doing this in the grocery store? $500?" asked @jensreesman.

  1. Elrich supported masks in indoor areas, but he doesn't want to wear a mask indoors and fully vaccinated people need to mask up. Insane.

  2. Did anyone bother to find out why he was not wearing a mask in this ONE photo? Don't think so. This sounds like the same false alarm basted when Mayor Bowser was seen mask-less at a wedding. Pathetic.

    1. 11:06: Mayor Bowser actually got 4 Pinocchios from the Washington Post fact-checker for claiming that she had followed the mask mandate at the event. She had not. Similarly, there was no eating or drinking taking place in the classroom when Elrich's mask was removed. That is the only exception allowed for removing a mask indoors here and in D.C.

    2. The question was avoided as expected, how long and why was it off? I see an opportunistic photogger snapping a GOTCHA! for the benefit of the exec haters.

    3. 10:58: I'm not an Elrich hater. The question of why the mask was off isn't really essential here, because the mask order only allows the mask to be off for eating or drinking. The photographer was either David Trone or a staff member of his, so I doubt they were trying to make a fellow Democrat look bad.

  3. I agree that Elrich is clearly wrong, but intent does matter. I forgot to put my mask on when entering a restaurant just yesterday. I wasn't trying to be an ass, just like I suspect Elrich isn't trying to be an ass. At a minimum, he surely didn't intend to give easy ammo to opponents.

    1. 12:56: I agree - he even had the tv reporter standing 6 feet away when he was interviewed a few weeks ago, so he's not egregiously trying to put people at risk.

    2. Yet, here you present this as JAW DROPPING, SHOCK & AWE evidence that the Exec is violating his own mandate. Hypocritical at the least, Tucker Carlsonish at best.

    3. 1:45: It can't be hypocritical, because I'm not the one breaking the mandate of my own government of which I am the highest elected official. That's what makes it newsworthy. I find Elrich to be largely correct on most County issues, but he does have a gaffe from time to time, like voting for the White Flint and Westbard sector plans. Nobody's perfect!
