Seating, as well as kitchen and counter equipment, are now in place. Prime is located in the ground floor of the Thayer & Spring apartment building.

Fuddruckers prepares return in Silver Spring

Fuddruckers is getting ready to reopen its former restaurant at 819 Ellsworth Drive at Downtown Silver Spring. The burger chain is staging a return after having closed its Montgomery County locations about five years ago. A County liquor license hearing for the restaurant will be held tomorrow, November 21, 2024 at 9:30 AM. Ted Turner would tell you to order the Buffalo burger, now that the Mandela Effect has given him another opportunity to do so.

Holiday "Flash Lights" decorated buses to return on US 29 in December

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation announced that "Flash Lights" buses decorated for the holidays will return on the Colesville Road/U.S. 29 Ride On Flash bus rapid transit line in December. With neon bright lights and decorations, the buses will be hard to miss, particularly after dark. MCDOT encourages the public to post pictures of the Flash Lights buses on their X, Facebook or Instagram accounts, and tag @MCDOTNow for a chance to win a $25 gift card. One winner will be randomly selected from all participants in a weekly drawing. The contest begins on Monday, December 3, 2024. Details will be posted on RidetheFlash.com.

Montgomery County police responded to a report of shoplifting at Westfield's Wheaton Plaza mall on Saturday, November 16, 2024. Officers arriving at the scene at JCPenney quickly determined the matter was more serious than the call indicated. The adult male suspect was detained, and a database search indicated he was wanted on a previous 1st-degree burglary charge, for which a warrant had been issued.

Officers searched the suspect, and found he was carrying a loaded firearm. The suspect was taken into custody without incident, 4th District Police Commander Captain David Smith said.

Obra Pharmacy burglarized in Cloverly

Montgomery County police responded to a report of a burglary at Obra Pharmacy at 15525 New Hampshire Avenue in Cloverly during the early morning hours of October 30, 2024. Officers responding to the scene found evidence of forced entry at the business. They determined that the burglar stole pharmaceuticals. Police describe the suspect only as a Black male of unknown age. If you have any information about this incident, call police at (301) 279-8000.

Virginia beats Maryland again, wins $1.3 billion manufacturing facility & 2015 jobs

Could Maryland and Montgomery County use a $1.3 billion corporate investment, 2015 high-wage jobs, and a major infusion of tax revenue? Yes! Did we win the 500,000-square-foot Microporous manufacturing facility? No! But Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin will give you three guesses as to who did. Yet again, our rival across the Potomac River has bested us in the economic development sweepstates.

Microporous, a leading manufacturer of battery separators, will construct the $1.3 billion facility in Berry Hill, Virginia. The factory will create 2015 new, high-wage jobs, and will provide more freight traffic for the Port of Virginia. Tennessee-based Microporous was founded as the American Rubber Company, which patented the first rubber battery separator in 1934. Today, their products are in high demand, as adoption of electric vehicles explodes in many countries around the world, even if demand for EVs still lags in the United States. Virginia's port will indeed see a boost in outbound traffic as a result, as Microporous is the only manufacturer of rubber battery separators used in electric automobiles and mobility devices.

“This historic $1.35 billion investment by Microporous in Pittsylvania County marks a new chapter in Virginia's incredible advanced manufacturing story,” Youngkin said in a statement yesterday. “This project not only brings over 2,000 new jobs to Southside Virginia, but also positions the Commonwealth at the forefront of our nation’s resurgence in manufacturing. Microporous' decision to establish their new facility here underscores Virginia's competitive advantages and our commitment to leading the way in innovative industries.” Youngkin's office identified North Carolina as the other finalist for the facility; it's unclear if Maryland even attempted to pursue the opportunity, or was once again asleep at the switch.

Strong-arm cart-jacking in Silver Spring

The carjackers of Montgomery County are now turning to seizing golf carts. But the Grand Theft Auto-esque adventures of three juveniles were short-lived after Montgomery County police caught up with them. The three teens allegedly cart-jacked two golf carts in the 13900 block of Castle Boulevard around 4:00 PM on October 29, 2024. One of the adult male victims was assaulted in the process, police say. Officers recovered the golf carts, and arrested two juvenile males aged 16 and 17, and a juvenile female aged 15. All three are residents of Silver Spring, police say. 

Silver Spring museum adds Evans AutoRailer to collection

The National Capital Trolley Museum, located at 1313 Bonifant Road in the Colesville area of Silver Spring, has added another rare vehicle to its collection. A 1936 Evans AutoRailer that was used locally by the Arlington & Fairfax Railway during the late 1930s is now on display. The vehicle was unique in that it could travel on the road as a bus, or on the rails as a passenger car. 

“We are thrilled to add Arlington and Fairfax #109 to our collection,” National Capital Trolley Museum Executive Director Eric Madison said in a statement yesterday. “This vehicle not only adds an exciting new dimension to our exhibits, but it also highlights the innovation and adaptability of transportation solutions that were developed during the mid-1930s. We invite all enthusiasts, families, and history buffs to visit and explore this fascinating piece of automotive and railway history.”

Strong-arm carjacking in Takoma Park

Takoma Park police responded to a report of a strong-arm carjacking early yesterday morning, November 10, 2024. The carjacking and assault were reported in the 7600 block of New Hampshire Avenue at 4:46 AM Sunday. A similar incident at a similar time of day took place on November 5 at 4:06 AM, when five male juveniles assaulted a driver and carjacked his vehicle in the 700 block of Ethan Allen Avenue.

Maryland Attorney General encourages racist text recipients to report messages

Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown issued a statement last night encouraging residents to report to law enforcement, and to civil rights and hate crime offices in the state, racist text messages that have allegedly been received by Black residents following Election Day. The general message of the texts, which have several versions, order the recipient to "board a bus" to be transported to a "plantation" for work "as a slave," Brown said. Students were among those who have reported receiving the message, Brown added. 

"The text messages appear to be part of a nationwide campaign targeting Black people in the wake of the election," Brown's statement read. “These messages are horrific, unacceptable, and will not be tolerated. If you have been sent one of these texts, I am asking for you to please come forward and report it,” Brown said. “I am committed to protecting the rights of all Marylanders. There is no home for hate in Maryland.”

If you have received a text message like this, Brown advised informing your local law enforcement agency, and filing a report with the following two offices: The Civil Rights Division of the Attorney General's office, and the Maryland Commission on Hate Crimes Response and Prevention.

 

Suspect arrested in botched Burtonsville Giant robbery

Montgomery County police arrested a suspect after a robbery attempt at a Giant supermarket in Burtonsville went south on October 24, 2024. At 5:48 PM, the suspect allegedly attempted to rob the store's pharmacy of prescription medications. He was not successful, and officers were able to take him into custody.

Tavon Body, 31, of Bowie has been charged with felony robbery, and two counts of 2nd-degree assault. Body was able to post $10,000 bond, but Judge Karen Ferretti revoked that on October 31, and it appears he remains in custody at this time. A preliminary hearing in the case has been scheduled for November 22 in Montgomery County District Court in Rockville.

Fairfax County beats Montgomery County again, winning CMC Electronics facility

Montgomery County has suffered another loss to Northern Virginia in the competition to win a new research and development facility from CMC Electronics. The avionics manufacturer chose Reston, Virginia for its new office and R&D facility, which will bring 89 high-wage jobs to Fairfax County at the start, with more to be added in the future. Virginia Delegate Karen Keys-Gamarra confirmed that the finalists in the race were Virginia, Maryland, Alabama, and Florida. On a positive note, at least Maryland was engaged in this contest - and in the running until the end - rather than being asleep at the switch.

It's hard not to notice the proximity of CMC's future facility site in Reston to Dulles International Airport. Dulles is the only airport in our region with the flight frequency and international destinations that meet the demands of international businesspeople. Montgomery County and Maryland continue to cut off their ideological nose to spite their economic development face, by blocking construction of a new Potomac River crossing from the I-270 corridor to Dulles.

Visionworks closes at Wheaton Plaza

Visionworks has closed at Westfield's Wheaton Plaza mall. It appears to be the latest victim of the moribund Montgomery County economy. That's because the Texas-based eyewear chain's overall financial performance has been strong nationwide. Visionworks hasn't closed many stores; in fact, it had a net gain of 28 new store openings last year, for a total of 773 locations. It also ended 2023 as one of the Top 10 optical retailers in America, even finishing ahead of the much-hipper Warby Parker, according to Vision Monday.

Skye Antojitos Hondureños has opened at 2322 University Boulevard West in Wheaton. This was formerly home to Q'viva. The new restaurant serves authentic and popular Honduran dishes. Early reviews are very positive, giving the restaurant a perfect 5-star rating on Google so far.

Police seeking suspects in Wheaton Safeway assault, attempted robbery

Montgomery County police are seeking the public's help in identifying and locating two suspects in the September 14, 2024 assault and attempted robbery of a Safeway customer in Wheaton. The customer was approached by two women while entering the store that evening. When the customer finished shopping and approached their vehicle in the garage shortly before 9:15 PM, they were followed by the same two female suspects (NOTE: Police did not identify the victim as male or female). The women allegedly hit and kicked the victim, and knocked the victim to the ground.

A witness to the garage attack shouted, and told the assailants to stop. The two suspects then fled out of the garage toward Fern Street on foot. Police describe the suspects as two Black females, approximately 18-years-of-age. 

Suspect #1 is described as being 5'5" to 5'7" tall, with a light complexion and short ponytail. She was wearing a pink sweater, white t-shirt and jeans, and was carrying a pink phone case. Suspect #2 is described as having a thin build, with a dark complexion. She was wearing a black sweater and black bonnet.

Weapons arrest in Briggs Chaney area of Silver Spring

A traffic stop in the Briggs Chaney area of Silver Spring led to an arrest on weapons charges on October 14, 2024. At 11:17 PM that night near the intersection of Briggs Chaney Road and Old Briggs Chaney Road, Montgomery County police found a vehicle occupant to allegedly be in violation of multiple Maryland gun laws. 

D’Marco Sanderson, 26, of Silver Spring was arrested and charged with possession of a stolen firearm, failure to show registration for a machine gun, possession of a firearm used in a crime of violence or possessed by a convicted felon, illegal possession of ammunition, illegal possession of a registered firearm, handgun in vehicle, and loaded handgun in vehicle. Sanderson is being held without bond, according to Maryland court records. A preliminary hearing in the case has been scheduled for November 8 in Montgomery County District Court in Rockville.

Cubano's building for sale in downtown Silver Spring

The former Cubano's restaurant building at 1201 Fidler Lane in downtown Silver Spring is now available for sale. Prospective buyers could choose to open a new restaurant using the existing kitchen infrastructure, or redevelop the 4352-square-foot property, which has a 200' allowable height limit under the existing zoning. 

The asking price for the building is $2,750,000, according to the online listing, and leasing at a rate of $14,000-per-month NNN is also an option offered. "NNN" - which stands for triple net lease - means you as the tenant pay all operating expenses for the property in addition to the monthly rent, such as taxes and insurance. Still hungry for Cubano's? You're in luck: their downtown Bethesda location is still open.

Randolph Crossing Walgreens space available for lease

Walgreens appears to be on the way out at 12222 Veirs Mill Road at the Randolph Crossing shopping center. Its 12000-square-foot end space is being marketed as available for lease by the property owner. This was formerly a Rite Aid store, but was converted to Walgreens when that chain acquired its struggling competitor. Now Walgreens is struggling, and announced earlier this month that it would be closing 1,200 of its stores across America. 

Paid parking coming to Takoma Junction parking lot next month

Get ready to start paying for parking at the Takoma Junction parking lot at 201 Ethan Allen Avenue next month. Metered parking will operate using the ParkMobile app beginning in mid-November, the City of Takoma Park says. The parking fee at Takoma Junction will be $1 per hour, with a maximum of 2 hours parking permitted. 

Paid parking will be enforced between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM Monday through Saturday. Parking in the lot will be free on Sundays. No overnight parking will be allowed.

Maryland fugitive captured in Takoma Park

Takoma Park police "came into contact" with an individual who was wanted in another Maryland jurisdiction on October 15, 2024. The encounter took place in the 1100 block of University Boulevard at 12:50 PM that afternoon. An officer ran the subject's name through a database, and discovered they had three outstanding warrants in Prince George's County. The subject was immediately taken into custody.

Armed robbery of woman in Aspen Hill

Three armed teens ganged up to rob a lone woman in Aspen Hill on October 10, 2024, Montgomery County police allege. At 4:15 PM that afternoon, police say, the three suspects approached the adult female victim in the 3200 block of Bel Pre Road. One of them displayed a weapon. They took money and property from the woman, and fled on foot.

Police describe the suspects only as three Hispanic males, ages 16 to 18. If you have any information about this incident, call police at (301) 279-8000.

Silver Spring apartment building for sale

One of the apartment buildings to pop up in downtown Silver Spring over the last decade has already hit the market for sale. Fenwick Apartments at 8616 2nd Avenue is a stack-and-pack style mid-rise development with 311 units. Located 5 minutes from the Silver Spring Metro station, the building's 20,000 square feet of amenity space includes an art collection, a fitness studio, a pool, and a private business center. The listing indicates the building was completed in 2014, but does not include the asking price for the property.

Montgomery County willing to mortgage Upcounty's future to kill M-83 Highway

More than half a decade ago, the Montgomery County Council again nixed plans to build the M-83 Midcounty Highway Extended that has long been in the County's master plan. The highway was one of two major infrastructure projects that were essential to the major growth proposed for the Upcounty area, and Clarksburg in particular. When Clarksburg was allowed to grow more than 800% in population earlier this century, its new residents were promised the M-83 Highway, and a Corridor Cities Transitway light rail system that would connect the proposed new growth centers between Rockville and Clarksburg to the Shady Grove Metro station. In the end, however, all of the growth was allowed to occur, and developers reaped their massive profits - but the promised highway and light rail were never built. That display of naked greed by our developer-controlled County Council wasn't enough - now the Council and Planning Board want to remove the M-83 from the master plan altogether, so it can never be built.

Such a move would be a dereliction of duty by the public officials charged with ensuring adequate infrastructure to maintain a functioning transportation system. Montgomery County doesn't have that even today. Imagine what traffic will be like in another decade with leaders who continue to block completion of our master plan highway system.

As a quick review of the correspondence received by the Planning Board ahead of two public meetings and a November public hearing on changes to the master plan reveals, it isn't residents who are asking for the M-83 to be removed from the plan. In fact, the only letter from an actual Upcounty resident on the question is asking the Planning Board to keep the M-83 in the plan. Those who are asking to have the highway removed are the same handful of tiny groups who have tried to block construction of the highway at every turn. M-83 wasn't even up for discussion, until these groups met privately with Montgomery County Planning Department officials earlier this year.

Our anti-highway, war-on-cars Planning Board is all too eager to indulge this ultra-minority request. Shockingly, so is the "leadership" of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation. The same MCDOT that once determined that Alternative 9a - the master plan alignment of M-83 - should be constructed, until the Council politically interfered with the department, overruling sound traffic engineering practices with radical ideology.

Montgomery County officials continue to rule against the wishes of their own Upcounty constituents. You know, the folks who pay their salaries, and keep the lights on at the County Council and Planning Department. 

You would think the Planning Department and County Council would at least feel a stinging sense of shame at their disastrous record on growth in the Upcounty.

Think again.

Longtime residents will well remember the talking points planners and Councilmembers alike sold us as they rammed through sector plans for new growth centers like "Science City," Watkins Mill, Damascus, and Clarksburg. There would be job centers right in these areas, so many new residents wouldn't have to drive down I-270 to Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia! There would be vibrant town centers in Clarksburg and Watkins Mill! There would be a library in Clarksburg! There would be an M-83 Highway between Montgomery Village Avenue and Ridge Road, which - given that we knew the vast majority of new Upcounty residents would commute by car - would divert much of the new Clarksburg, Germantown, and Damascus traffic from I-270, MD 355, and little old Brink Road onto a modern parkway that also would include a major new bicycle link! And for those who could be convinced to board a convenient rail transit alternative, there would be a Corridor Cities light rail system!

None of it ever happened. Not one bit of it.

And no politician paid the price. Even in the myriad of scandals surrounding Clarksburg alone, the Council and Planning Department let Derick Berlage be the lone fall guy. Now, after collecting twenty years' worth of fat checks from their developer sugar daddies, they want to kick Upcounty residents where it hurts one more time, really hard.

They'll probably get away with it. Again. The Council is pretty open about the fact that there simply aren't enough votes in the Upcounty to pose a risk to the holders of the At-Large Council seats in the next election year. And the individual Upcounty Council districts have been severely gerrymandered, to ensure that the residents of the various growth areas like Clarksburg, Damascus, and Germantown can't unite to knock out any one Councilmember come election time. They have repeatedly thumbed their nose at Upcounty residents, and privately call County taxpayers "suckers" and "losers."

Getting away with murder doesn't make it right, however. The Planning Department, Planning Board, and County Council will continue to augment and solidify their legacy of shame, failure, embarrassment, reckless irresponsibility, and dereliction of duty. They'll continue to let a handful of special interests, and their developer sugar daddies, block economic growth and progress at every turn. 

We've seen the results of the failure to build the M-83 Highway, the new Potomac River crossing of I-370 to the Dulles area in Virginia, the Rockville Freeway, the Northwest Freeway, the North-Central Freeway, and the Northern Parkway in Montgomery County. Residents sitting in traffic. Higher shipping prices. Job creation and business growth numbers at or near the bottom in the D.C. region. And a failure to attract a single new major corporate headquarters in over a quarter century.

Three men allegedly ganged up to rob the Silver Hot Dog food truck in downtown Silver Spring, Montgomery County police say. At 7:16 PM on October 11, the truck was parked in the 1100 block of Wayne Avenue. The three suspects approached the truck, and fled with money and property. Assault reported at Harmony Hills ES in Aspen Hill

Montgomery County police responded to a report of a 2nd-degree assault at Harmony Hills Elementary School in Aspen Hill early Monday evening, October 14, 2024. The assault was reported at the school at 6:04 PM Monday. Harmony Hills is located at 13407 Lydia Street.

Assault at Ellsworth Place in Silver Spring

Montgomery County police responded to a report of a 2nd-degree assault at Ellsworth Place mall in downtown Silver Spring yesterday afternoon, October 16, 2024. The assault was reported at 4:48 PM Wednesday. Last January, the mall announced it had hired a new security team to protect patrons and employees of businesses at the center, at a time when retailers nationwide are dealing with a sustained spike in shoplifting.

Montgomery County Council pushing plastic bag ban

The Montgomery County Council has only done three things this century: raise taxes, drive business away from and out of the county, and ban stuff. You won't be surprised to hear that they are at it again, with another new law that will do all three. As a body that only copies legislation from other jurisdictions around the country, they're actually a bit late to the table on this one, but they're going to try and ban plastic bags. That goes for grocery stores, and restaurant takeout.

The ban also includes a new tax. There's already a tax on each bag you receive at a business. The deceptively-titled Bring Your Own Bag Bill will ban plastic bags altogether, and place a 10-cent tax on paper bags. They'll say you won't have to pay it, if you remember to bring your stained and germ-ridden reusable shopping bags with you. The press release falsely claims that the bill will create "a more sustainable future for the County," and "improve the effectiveness of the carryout bag tax law." 

If you ask yourself - or anyone outside of the small world of the Montgomery County cartel - to name one thing the Council has done to improve the quality of life since 2000, good luck getting an answer. They haven't. They've just raised taxes, driven business away, and banned stuff. To be fair, they've also jacked up your health insurance premiums with the ambulance fee, and your auto insurance premiums by defunding the police, leading to skyrocketing auto theft and stolen auto parts. Heckuva job, Brownie!

The faces change, but the Council stays the same since the cartel seized control of it in 2002. Smug, arrogant, and corrupt, with delusions of innovation, while plagiarizing the dumbest legislation from Eugene, Oregon to Sacramento, California. Your taxes go up, and so do their salaries, just like Bell, California. They said a bag tax would save the environment, just like they claimed natural gas was the solution to global warming. Lies, all lies, that evaporated as quickly as the Council-mandated paper straw does in your iced coffee. Incompetence combined with autocratic power is a recipe for failure, which is all we've seen in Montgomery County this century. 

But this is what a majority of Montgomery County voters continue to vote for, and they're getting exactly what they wanted. As the writer from another Maryland jurisdiction where voters don't have the heart to punish the elected officials who reliably fail them once wrote, “Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard.”

Suspect arrested in Wheaton homicide

Montgomery County Police have arrested a suspect in the fatal stabbing that occurred in Wheaton on Sunday, October 13, 2024. Detectives from the Major Crimes Division have charged 30-year-old Jose Emilio Ortiz Alba with first-degree murder in the death of 45-year-old Hesler Saul Sanchez Cruz. The incident took place in the 11300 block of Fern Street.

According to police, officers were patrolling the area around 3:27 AM, when they discovered a truck on the median of University Boulevard. Upon further investigation, they found the victim suffering from a stab wound. Despite efforts by emergency responders, Sanchez Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following an investigation, Ortiz Alba was identified as the suspect. An arrest warrant was obtained, and he was taken into custody the same day. The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070.

Wheaton man arrested in Glenmont auto theft

Montgomery County police have arrested a suspect, and recovered the vehicle, in an October 4, 2024 auto theft in Glenmont. The vehicle had been left running and unlocked in the 12300 block of Georgia Avenue at 3:18 PM when it was stolen, police say. Officers recovered the vehicle, and arrested Wesley Brown, 31, of Wheaton.

Brown has been charged with felony unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, felony theft, and misdemeanor unauthorized removal of a motor vehicle. He was ordered held without bond, according to Maryland Court records. A trial has been scheduled for November 21 in Montgomery County District Court in Silver Spring.
