Tropical Smoothie Cafe is coming to downtown Silver Spring. It will be located at 1200 East-West Highway, in the ground floor of the 1200 East-West apartment tower. That space was most recently home to Crave Cafe. The chain has existing locations in Wheaton and Four Corners, but is finally venturing downtown to the heart of Silver Spring.

McDonald's burglarized in downtown Silver Spring

Montgomery County police responded to a report of a burglary at the McDonald's restaurant at 8407 Colesville Road in downtown Silver Spring on August 10, 2026. Officers responding to the scene found evidence of forced entry at the restaurant. They determined that unspecified property had been stolen from inside the building. Police believe the break-in occurred sometime between 12:01 AM and 5:00 AM that morning. The suspect is described only as a Black male of unknown age.

Lamoon Thai restaurant for sale in Silver Spring

Do you want to own a Thai restaurant? Lamoon Thai at 906 Thayer Avenue in downtown Silver Spring is now available for sale. The restaurant is still fully open for business, and as such, is being marketed as a turnkey business opportunity for an aspiring restaurateur out there. According to the online sale listing, the asking price is $100,000. There are about thirteen months left on the restaurant's lease.

YeEnat Kitchen opens in Silver Spring

YeEnat Kitchen has opened at 8301 Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring. The Ethiopian restaurant takes over the space that was formerly home to Lucy. I'm not seeing any reviews on Yelp or Google yet, but have seen a couple of positive TikTok posts by early customers.

Easy Like Sunday opens in Silver Spring

Easy Like Sunday, an all-week brunch restaurant, is now open at 8455 Fenton Street in downtown Silver Spring. This is the local chain's third Maryland location, with two existing restaurants in Baltimore. Specialties include Crab Cake Eggs Benedict, Fried Chicken with Cornmeal Pancakes and a Short Rib Grilled Cheese Sandwich. Easy Like Sunday is open seven days a week from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Italian Kitchen for sale in Silver Spring

Italian Kitchen is now being offered for sale in Silver Spring. The restaurant closed last August after a successful decade in business. Nearly a year later, a banner attached to the building is announcing the business - not the building - is now available for sale. Italian Kitchen is located at 8201 Fenton Street in downtown Silver Spring.

The Guardian apartments amped about Paris Baguette in Silver Spring

The Guardian apartments at 8605 Cameron Street in downtown Silver Spring have gotten a lot of attention for being a successful conversion of office space to residential, while many in the region are still just talking about it. Now another aspect of the project is turning heads, thanks to a massive banner high up on the building facade. It's promoting the imminent arrival of a Paris Baguette cafe and bakery in the ground floor of the building. 

MoCo Crust pizzeria coming soon to Silver Spring

MoCo Crust, a pizzeria offering "crafted cocktails," is coming soon to the Montgomery Hills area of Silver Spring. It will be at 1907 Seminary Road, the previous home of Meleket Ethiopian Restaurant, which closed earlier this year. One permanent sign has been installed above the storefront. A message posted in the window says that MoCo Crust is being opened by the same team behind neighboring restaurant Lime & Cilantro.

YeEnat Kitchen opening in Silver Spring

YeEnat Kitchen is coming to downtown Silver Spring. The Ethiopian restaurant will be located at 8301 Georgia Avenue. That was previously home to Lucy until its recent closure, meaning this corner will remain an Ethiopian dining destination for some time to come. YeENAT Kitchen has a liquor license hearing scheduled for July 16, 2026 at 11:30 AM.

Shah's Halal Food opening soon in Silver Spring

Shah's Halal Food is opening soon in downtown Silver Spring. It will be at 8517 Colesville Road, in the former Jerry's Subs & Pizza space in the Hale Center. Shah's began as a pushcart in Richmond Hill in Queens, New York in 2005. Founder Ibrahim Mashriqi's sons would ultimately build Shah's into the juggernaut it is today, rapidly expanding nationally and internationally.

Shah's has a famous signature white sauce that tops its meat and rice platters, gyros, and wraps. If this sounds familiar, well, it's because Ibrahim was one of many entrepreneurs in New York inspired by the 1990s innovations of The Halal Guys. But his sauce stands apart because he incorporated spices from his native Afghanistan into the recipe. Silver Spring diners will soon have a chance to taste test the difference for themselves.

Pho Nom Nom expanding to Silver Spring

Pho Nom Nom is parlaying its success in Rockville and Gaithersburg into a third Montgomery location, opening soon in Silver Spring. The Vietnamese restaurant has leased the space at 11225 New Hampshire Avenue, next to Tobacco Village at the White Oak Shopping Center. Give credit to property owner Saul Centers, which manages to squeeze in some surprising twists here among the typical strip mall denizens. Let's face it, you won't find Sarku Japan outside of a mall in Bethesda. And there is the always-delicious Pizza Castle.

Lucy Ethiopian Restaurant closed in Silver Spring

Lucy Ethiopian Restaurant has closed at 8301 Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring. The windows are papered over, but there is no message posted for customers. Google states that the restaurant is "temporarily closed." The restaurant's website is currently down, however.

Society Seafood House opens in Silver Spring

Society Seafood House has opened at 8229 Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring. It is holding a soft opening weekend today and tomorrow, April 11-12, 2026. The restaurant will open at 5:00 PM each evening. "Chic evening attire" is recommended in the announcement. The new restaurant is a change in dining concept from the owners of previous tenant Society Restaurant & Lounge.

Update on Society Seafood House in Silver Spring

The sign is up at Society Seafood House at 8229 Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring. Last night, it was already hooked up and lit after dark. The seafood concept is a rebrand of Society Restaurant & Lounge at this location. They have begun recruiting staff for the new restaurant in the last week.

Signage installed at Momiji Sushi in Silver Spring (Photos)

Permanent signage has been installed at Momiji Sushi Izakaya & Japanese Ramen at 1201 Fidler Lane in downtown Silver Spring. This was formerly home to Cubano's, from which some signage has been left behind. There are still some windows that need to be replaced, judging from the plywood substitutes. The restaurant had its liquor license hearing way back in November.

Easy Like Sunday brunch restaurant coming soon to Silver Spring

I saw a sign in front of the former El Sapo Cuban Social Club at 8455 Wayne Avenue in downtown Silver Spring that said Coming Soon, but was partly flapped over by the wind of recent days to only read "Comin--." No, it wasn't the Montgomery County Council promoting the Comintern. It's a banner ad for Easy Like Sunday, a brunch restaurant with two locations in Baltimore. If you enjoy a traditional brunch, they have all the favorites you would expect, some trendier dishes from the last decade or so, and a few creative original menu items to round out the selections. Both Charm City locations are open from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, seven days a week.

Driver crashes into Potbelly in White Oak

A driver crashed into the storefront of the Potbelly sandwich shop in the White Oak area of Silver Spring last Sunday, February 22, 2026. The front of the restaurant was then boarded up, as seen in the above photo, taken Wednesday evening. Montgomery County police have not commented publicly on the cause of the crash. Potbelly is located at 12273 Tech Road, in the Westech Corner shopping center.

Society transitioning to Society Seafood House in Silver Spring

The Society Restaurant & Lounge at 8229 Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring is temporarily closed. According to the restaurant's Instagram, it is rebranding as Society Seafood House. "Coming soon. Downtown Silver Spring's destination for seafood, cocktails and ambiance," their IG bio now reads. The rebranding was first reported by The MoCo Show.

Paris Baguette opening in Silver Spring

Paris Baguette is coming soon to downtown Silver Spring. It will be located at 8605 Cameron Street, in the new Guardian apartment building. South Korea-based Paris Baguette has a massive menu of French and Korean baked goods, hot lunch and snack items like tiny pizzas and pigs-in-a-blanket, and coffee and tea beverages. There's even a whole line of donuts, including cronuts and mochi donuts. Paris Baguette's expansion to Silver Spring was first reported by the Washington Business Journal.

Popeyes posts holiday hours in downtown Silver Spring

Popeyes at 8401 Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring has posted its holiday hours schedule. The restaurant will be open from 10:30 AM to 10:30 PM on Christmas Eve. It will be closed all day on Christmas Day. The day after Christmas, it will be open from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Regular business hours will be observed on New Year's Eve. Hours on New Year's Day will be 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM. The lobby will close two hours before closing time on each of these days.
