County Council approves WSSC nominee who was sentenced for DWI

The Montgomery County Council, which has talked tough about drunk driving, voted yesterday to approve the nomination of T. Eloise Foster to the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. Foster was sentenced for driving while impaired, after being pulled over by a Maryland State Trooper on I-95 in 2007.

At the time, Foster retained her position as Maryland's budget secretary despite her sentencing.

Foster is the latest addition to the water and sewer utility with a spotty driving record. WSSC chief Carla Reid has crashed 5 WSSC-issued vehicles, totaling one of them in a rollover wreck on the Capital Beltway, according to The Washington Post.

Earlier this year, County Councilmember Roger Berliner said that "in order to take serious action against reckless, irresponsible and intoxicated drivers, we need legislators in Annapolis to pass measures that go after the people who should not be on the road with real penalties.” The following month, Council President Nancy Floreen wrote, "The Montgomery County Council joins our Police Chief in calling for the State of Maryland to strengthen our laws against drunk and impaired driving,"

Once again, the Montgomery County political cartel has failed to match words with actions.

  1. The Council is the one on the high horse about drunk driving, not me. Their actions don't match their words. "What does this have to do with east county?" The appointee lives in Silver Spring, Silver Spring elects several of these councilmembers, and pays high rates to WSSC as customers.

    1. You are a complete moron. Yes, I wake up at 6am and check this blog because it's an assignment from a government out to get you. Or, you know, I live in downtown Silver Spring and like to check for local stories before going to work. My councilmember is Tom Hucker - in case you're curious - though I voted for Evan Glass and still wish he'd won.

    2. Anonymous 1:51, we need to find you an old size 12 shoes to stuff in your dirty mouth. A new one would be a waste. You sound very uncivilized and low class.

  4. 12;35: It doesn't mean you're incompetent. But if the political person at the head of your government or agency had made a big point about cracking down on drivers like Foster, he or she would be a hypocrite in hiring you. Everybody makes mistakes, and it certainly speaks to Foster's judgement. But the story here is the County Council's actions once again not matching up with their words.

  5. As far as I'm aware, the council's words have never been "if you get a DUI then you shouldn't be able to have a job 10 years later." People who commit a crime need to pay their debt (fine, jail time, what have you), but then of course we want them to be contributing members of society afterwards.
