Some of the gas pumps are now cordoned off at the Gulf gas station at 8600 Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring. It appears
the plan to break ground on a 173-room extended-stay hotel project on this site is moving forward on schedule this month. The redevelopment hit a year-long snag last year.
The area was taped off so they could apply seal coat to the asphalt. The tape is down and the gas station is operating normally. I'm not saying the hotel developer won't break ground this month as your prior post stated, but this post's headline (Silver Spring gas station begins shutting down for redevelopment) and the premise of the post is incorrect.

DeleteI thought the same thing, but it's true. About an hour ago I walked there and the asphalt is fresh black today (and you can see it in the photos you posted). The employee in the payment kiosk confirmed that's why the tape was up.
DeleteWow, I wonder what this means for the future of the hotel development. I'll have to investigate. That asphalt would have been one of the first things torn up this month if the groundbreaking went forward.
DeleteProbably doesn't mean anything. Seal coating is cheap compared to milling and applying new asphalt. It's possible this was previously scheduled and they forgot to cancel it. Or they were inspected by MoCo and told to get it done even if groundbreaking was imminent. Or the hotel is postponed again. Or none of the above.
