Gaithersburg-based Buchanan Partners is gearing up for the next phase of its redevelopment of the Privacy World property by the Glenmont Metro station. A virtual meeting for Glenmont Metro Center Phase 2.1 was held last night, and featured the first renderings of a new apartment building that will be located on Glenallen Avenue.
Between the new building and one that is already under construction to its east will be a park. Buchanan hopes to break ground on the new building within the next 18 months.

This is rather exciting. Although, doesn't look like any retail spaces included? If there will be all these people moving in, where will they shop? The beat up strip mall across the street?! :)
ReplyDeleteThis type of redevelopment is exactly what should be encouraged (tax credits, zoning) across the county's older suburbs. These 1950-60s garden style apartments are so energy inefficient, so lead paint-filled, and so land-inefficient/surface parking-filled that their redevelopment is absolutely key to meeting population growth in a way that both efficient and increases quality of life @ all income levels.
ReplyDeleteGround level retail is planned. Plus the next phase (2.2) on the corner of Georgia and Glenallan is planned to be a grocery store or comparable retail. It's all just plans for now, we'll see how it ends up.
ReplyDeletelets hope it becomes the next wheaton
DeleteThe original plans called for over 90k sqft of retail space. So far none has been built. Please explain!!!
