Aspen Hill Club sold, longtime owner confirms

The Aspen Hill Club has been sold to a local real estate firm, the owner confirmed in a letter to members. A popular fitness center at 14501 Homecrest Road in Silver Spring, the roadside landmark has been family owned since 1977. Owner Eddie Lenkin said he decided it was time to step aside. 

The club will continue to operate, and the new owners will retain the current management team, Lenkin said. He did not identify the buyer, but noted that the sale will be finalized this month. Some members have expressed concern that the firm might seek to redevelop the prime property the club sits upon.

Be Miyghty Fitness moving again in Silver Spring

Two things are true about Be Miyghty Fitness in downtown Silver Spring: The mixed-martial-arts and yoga studio isn't wedded to one spot when a better one opens up, and Google search still can't come to grips with the unique spelling of the gym's name. Be Miyghty is on the move for the second time this year, and this time it's a short one. Their new studio is right next door to their old one, at 937 Ellsworth Drive. A construction crew was working inside the new 937 Ellsworth location on Sunday. No signage has been attached to the exterior yet.

Gold's Gym construction update in downtown Silver Spring (Photos)

Permanent signage has been installed at the future Gold's Gym location at 901 Wayne Avenue at Downtown Silver Spring. Wow, has this been a long construction. Clearly, they missed the late-spring opening date this year. Maybe you can make the delays work for you, if you were procrastinating about signing up for a founder's membership. 

Gold's Gym launches web page for future Silver Spring location

Gold's Gym has activated an official page for its future location at Downtown Silver Spring. The page has images and information about the fitness facility, and a sign-up form to reserve status as a Founding Member. Located at 901 Wayne Avenue, Gold's Gym will front onto Fenton Street next to Burger Fi. The gym will mark Gold's' return to Silver Spring after the closure of its Layhill Center facility.

F45 Training opens in downtown Silver Spring

F45 Training has opened its new downtown Silver Spring gym. The Mark Wahlberg-backed fitness concept is in the ground floor of the Solaire 8250 Georgia apartment building. Nice amenity for those living in the building upstairs.

Club Pilates Silver Spring soft opening

The new Club Pilates at 956 Thayer Avenue in downtown Silver Spring is having a soft opening, You can sign up for classes on their website as of this morning. They're also offering a New Member bundle for $60, that includes a Silver Spring Club Pilates t-shirt, two pairs of Tavi Noir, a Club Pilates water bottle and a member tote bag to haul it all around in.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Swim Center reopens in White Oak

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Swim Center at 1201 Jackson Road has reopened after extensive repairs and renovations. Montgomery County's Recreation Department, which operates and maintains the facility, says it had not received any revitalization or mechanical improvements in over 35 years before this. 

Outside lighting, driveways and parking areas have all been improved. Other cosmetic changes include new signage, doors, flooring, carpeting and paint. The roof has been replaced, and bathrooms and other parts of the facility have received ADA updates. A new bike rack has been installed, as well.

The pool is open to Montgomery County residents and pool pass holders only. Reservations are strongly encouraged, as patrons with reservations will have priority admission. Call 240-777-8060 for reservations or with other questions you may have.

Club Pilates coming to Thayer & Spring in Silver Spring

Breaking news from the new Thayer & Spring apartments in downtown Silver Spring: Another new tenant has been signed for the ground floor retail there. Club Pilates will open a studio at 956 Thayer Avenue.

Construction is underway inside the space, and as you can see, there's quite a way to go yet. But give the company points for energy. They have already installed signage and window stencils for the studio. Free introductory classes will be offered via their website when Club Pilates opens.

Silver Spring construction update: Pure Barre (Photos)

There's a ways to go still on the fit-out of Pure Barre at the Central development in downtown Silver Spring. The popular fitness studio's newest location has some lighting in place, as well as lockers. It will eventually join Orange Theory at arguably the fittest apartment building in Montgomery County. You can already sign up online. When open, Pure Barre will be located at 8455 Fenton Street.

Orange Theory, a new fitness concept coming to the Central development in downtown Silver Spring, looks pretty close to finished inside. The Florida-based chain popping up in urban areas across the region blends cardio and strength training into intense interval workouts. Orange Theory will be located at 8455 Fenton Street. Central itself also is sporting a new sign out front.
