Ongoing water leak on Maple Avenue in Takoma Park to be repaired July 2 or 3

The City of Takoma Park reports that there is an ongoing water leak in the 7600 block of Maple Avenue. Water utility WSSC repaired a water main break there this past Tuesday. However, the WSSC crew found that there is an ongoing smaller leak in a valve at the same location. WSSC has scheduled a crew to return to the block on July 2 or 3 to repair the valve leak. This will require a temporary cutoff of water service to some nearby residents.

The reason the work is being put off until the first week of July is that the utility did not want customers to be without water during the heat wave that is now underway. WSSC also plans to perform the valve repair at night, to reduce the disruptive effect on customers in the community.

Utility work causes road closures in Wheaton (Photos + Video)

Westbound University Boulevard was closed at Grandview Avenue in Wheaton early this evening for emergency utility work. Utility crews were working to restore power after Saturday afternoon's storm. It looks like an out-of-state crew was helping out Pepco. A similiar scene is taking place on Bushey Drive at Randolph Road in the Wheaton-Glenmont area. Bushey is closed at Randolph.

Ramsey Avenue street closure ahead next week in Silver Spring

All road and utility work announcements must be taken with a grain of salt at the moment, given the recent snow storm and two others incoming over the next week. But for now, the Maryland Transit Administration is advising that a segment of Ramsey Avenue between Bonifant Street and the Silver Spring Transit Center will temporarily close to vehicular traffic starting "on or about January 10, 2022." The segment will remain closed through the end of January, although pedestrians will continue to have access during this time.

Utility locations related to the Purple Line will take place on this segment between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM during this closure. But don't be surprised if the dates move, especially if we get any more significant snowfall or icy conditions that interfere with the project.

Discolored water in Aspen Hill

The WSSC has issued a notice that customers in the Aspen Hill and Bel Pre areas of Silver Spring may notice discolored/brown water now and in the next couple of weeks. This is due to work being done in preparation for a large water main shutdown later this month, the utility says.

WSSC says discolored water is safe to drink, but that they do not recommend doing laundry in the discolored water. If the discoloration persists beyond January 21, WSSC advises you call them at 301-206-4002, or email them at emergencycallcenter@wsscwater.com.

Nighttime noise ahead near Silver Spring Ave./Georgia Ave. intersection

Noisy nights are ahead at the intersection of Silver Spring Avenue and Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring. An underground utility conduit is being installed there, and the Maryland State Highway Administration has required the work to be done at night, to avoid having to close two lanes on Georgia during busier daytime hours.

The conduit will be installed on nights between September 23 and September 27, 2019. Work hours are expected to be 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM nightly.
