Nighttime work ahead for Purple Line in Silver Spring, Lyttonsville, Long Branch

Additional overnight work hours may be needed this summer for the Purple Line light rail project between Bethesda and New Carrollton. The Maryland Transit Administration advises that some work may need to take place between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM, or during the overnight hours. Areas impacted within Montgomery County include Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Lyttonsville, Silver Spring, and Long Branch. Concrete pours in particular may need to occur in the cooler hours after dark. "Hot weather can cause issues while placing concrete due to rapid curing that can occur at higher ambient temperatures," the MTA said in a statement. "Crews will prioritize the noisiest work to the daytime shifts."

Ongoing water leak on Maple Avenue in Takoma Park to be repaired July 2 or 3

The City of Takoma Park reports that there is an ongoing water leak in the 7600 block of Maple Avenue. Water utility WSSC repaired a water main break there this past Tuesday. However, the WSSC crew found that there is an ongoing smaller leak in a valve at the same location. WSSC has scheduled a crew to return to the block on July 2 or 3 to repair the valve leak. This will require a temporary cutoff of water service to some nearby residents.

The reason the work is being put off until the first week of July is that the utility did not want customers to be without water during the heat wave that is now underway. WSSC also plans to perform the valve repair at night, to reduce the disruptive effect on customers in the community. 

Overnight utility work on Mansfield Road scheduled for Tuesday night

A crew will perform Purple Line-related utility work on Mansfield Road Tuesday night, July 13, 2021. The work will take place from 7:00 PM Tuesday to 7:00 AM Wednesday. It will be in the vicinity of the intersection of Mansfield and Wayne Avenue. Temporary lane closures will be required during the work. The project was postponed from an earlier date due to bad weather.

Nighttime noise ahead near Silver Spring Ave./Georgia Ave. intersection

Noisy nights are ahead at the intersection of Silver Spring Avenue and Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring. An underground utility conduit is being installed there, and the Maryland State Highway Administration has required the work to be done at night, to avoid having to close two lanes on Georgia during busier daytime hours.

The conduit will be installed on nights between September 23 and September 27, 2019. Work hours are expected to be 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM nightly.

24-hour generator coming to Fenton-Silver Spring intersection next month

The WSSC will be replacing a sewer main at the intersection of Fenton Street and Silver Spring Avenue in downtown Silver Spring next month. As part of the project, their contractor will be operating a generator at the intersection 24 hours a day for the duration of the work.

The part of the project requiring the generator is scheduled to begin in mid-May, and will take several weeks to complete. A noise waiver for the generator has been requested from Montgomery County. The intersection is about half-a-block from the nearest occupied residences on Fenton Street.

Nighttime work ahead for Lyttonsville Place Bridge

Expect nighttime noise near the Lyttonsville Place Bridge in November. Purple Line Transit Partners says its contractors will be working on the bridge overnight from 7:00 PM to 4:30 AM beginning November 12, 2018. Heavy construction at the bridge will continue during daytime hours on Saturdays, as well, during November.

Nighttime noise ahead in Wheaton

Nighttime noise is ahead in the Wheaton Triangle. The WSSC plans to replace a water main along Ennalls Avenue between Grandview Avenue and Veirs Mill Road. Work will be performed at night to avoid impacts on pedestrians, traffic and local businesses.

The project is scheduled to commence in October, and the work will be done between the hours of 9:00 PM and 7:00 AM. WSSC's contractor will have to receive a noise waiver from Montgomery County to work at night.

Washington Gas project on Sherwood Forest Drive to begin next week

A major Washington Gas project in the Colesville area may cause some significant inconveniences and noise along Sherwood Forest Drive, starting as soon as September 4, 2018. The utility is describing the project as a system upgrade, which will enhance their ability to inspect the infrastructure along this street. In real terms, there will be construction in and near the street, in the vicinity of 13304 Sherwood Forest Drive.

The project is expected to take five weeks to complete. Work will occur between 7:00 AM and 5:30 PM, Monday through Saturday. Work will be performed around the clock for a three-day period, tentatively scheduled for September 25, 26, and 28, when crews will work 24-hours-a-day to install a new valve. All work is subject to weather disruption, and the schedule may change accordingly.

Sherwood Forest Drive will be partially closed with concrete barriers throughout the five weeks of work. Residents will still have access to their homes at all times. Stock up on earplugs now.

Nighttime work on Georgia Avenue in Montgomery Hills

A natural gas line along Georgia Avenue is being replaced this week in the Montgomery Hills area of Silver Spring. The work area covers several blocks immediately south of the Beltway, and the replacement is being done at night to avoid impacts on commuters.

Work is scheduled to take place between 7:00 PM and 5:00 AM between Locust Grove Road and Corwin Drive. The project is scheduled to be completed by this weekend.

Washington Gas to replace gas lines, valves in East County, Takoma Park

Washington Gas is replacing several gas valves in eastern Montgomery County, and a gas line along New Hampshire Avenue in Takoma Park. Some of the work will have to be performed at night to avoid traffic impacts, as well as to comply with federal safety regulations. Washington Gas and contractor NPL have requested temporary noise waivers from Montgomery County for this purpose.

Gas valves will be replaced at the intersection of Sherwood Forest Drive and Randolph Road near Colesville, on New Hampshire Avenue between Tanley Road and Jackson Road in White Oak, and on New Hampshire Avenue between Oaklawn Drive and Powder Mill Road in Hillandale. The valve replacements will be made over several continuous three-day periods starting on July 24, 2018, and are expected to be complete by October(!).

The gas line being replaced is along New Hampshire Avenue between Linden Avenue and Auburn Avenue, and between Kingwood Drive and Erskine Street in Takoma Park. Work is scheduled to be performed between 7:00 PM and 5:00 AM, and is expected to be completed by October as well.
