With the year already off to a crime-filled start, one Silver Spring man took matters into his own hands when young thieves helped themselves to valuables from his car. Around 3:18 AM Wednesday, police received a call regarding thieves stealing from vehicles in the Good Hope/Briggs Chaney area, on Twig Road near the ICC. Officers began to cruise the neighborhood for the three suspects, when they were flagged down by another victim of the trio.
A resident of Rossiter Court, the man told police he had a gun, and had just shot at the three suspects after they stole something from his car. He surrendered his weapon to police. Moments later, a 911 call reported a shooting victim in the 1300 block of Elm Grove Circle. Police say the 18-year-old man - who was not identified by police, despite being an adult - was suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower body. His injury was not life-threatening, and he was transported to an unidentified hospital.
One of the accomplices was taken into custody, and another juvenile was captured on Good Hope Road. Those two juvenile accomplices have been charged with theft.
Was your car victimized, as well? Detectives are urging anyone with information about this event to contact 4th District detectives at 240-773-5530.
Wait, where's the quote where the victim says he was "fed up with rising crime"? If he didn't say it or even imply it, either in the police report or follow-up interview, why would it be in your headline? Journalism 101.
ReplyDeleteDid you miss the part about him shooting at the thieves? Who, what, when, where - it's all in this report. Journalism 101.
DeleteNo source then no Journalism 101. You have no proof that the shooter was fed up with crime. You're a blogger not a journalist.
Delete1:11: I'm indeed a journalist. The source is the police department.
DeleteSo a police department source told you that the suspect said he was fed up with rising crime? If so, you need to say so in your story, otherwise you, the writer, are assuming state of mind, a big no-no in journalism and courtrooms.
Delete11:56: Would you fire a gun at thieves who were taking something out of your car? Someone who would is clearly fed up with crime, to take the risk of being charged himself. A good journalist has to have a sharp, analytical mind. Think about it.
DeleteWhat's very odd is that the main Mont. Co. Police site does not mention at all the dead body found in a car in the Bel Pre area. That is not like them to omit such a case. What gives ???
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I've heard 1 or 2 other deaths on the police scanner in recent years that were not publicly announced. And that's just when I was listening! It's no coincidence the County's "open data" crime stats have been sabotaged to be unusable.
DeleteAnd were you all aware that a very similar event happened: same location 2 years ago ------ man found slumped in car shot dead !!
