Downtown Silver Spring Exxon could be replaced by retail or a fast food restaurant

Is the market for residential housing slowing in downtown Silver Spring? Real estate firm Streetsense is marketing the property of a current Exxon gas station at 8301 Fenton Street. But instead of the usual high-rise apartment building, they are envisioning a single-story inline retail strip mall or drive-thru fast food restaurant. I'm hoping for Taco Bell, or something we don't have here already like Hardee's or Jack-in-the-Box.

  1. Just what we need, more low brow retail and restaurants to populate Silver Spring.

On another note, anyone know what happened to the plans to build a hotel at the Georgia Ave/Colesville intersection. It seems to have died on the vine.

    1. The hotel at the corner should be breaking ground in the next month or two.

  2. Teej - I don't get it. You don't want more restaurants? I do.

  3. I don't get why the property owner wants to build this. Seems like you could make more money with another type of development?

    1. Teej - there are hardly any fast food restaurants in the area. There's tons of good food here.

  6. Of course a residential building wouldn't make sense, considering lot size and height restrictions. Maybe after the next master plan rework we'll see enough density allowed to facilitate substantial redevelopment.

  7. Narrow highrises have been built on other small service station lots around the county.

As a PED, I'm hoping for a good street experience from the new retail.

    1. And of course it could happen at this site - if the county allowed it to be up-zoned.

  8. I'm surprised that "lifelong Bethesda resident" Robert Dyer doesn't seem to remember Hardee's disastrous failure when they took over most of the Roy Rogers restaurants about three decades ago.

    1. Hardee's was a great success, in my opinion. Their Big Deluxe burger, ham and cheese sandwich and Krispy Kurls were great.
