Stabbing at Aldi in Calverton

This morning's news takes us back once again to Calverton. Montgomery County police were called to the Aldi at 12012 Cherry Hill Road at the Orchard Center on June 13, 2025. At 8:31 PM that evening, a male suspect allegedly displayed a weapon and stabbed a man at the grocery store. Police identified and arrested a suspect. 

Juan Rivas-Jordan, 44, of no fixed address, has been charged with felony 2nd-degree attempted murder, felony 1st-degree assault, misdemeanor theft, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held without bond at the County jail. 

According to Maryland court records, Rivas-Jordan had been arrested for theft and trespassing in a separate incident in March. On March 15, he posted $1000 bond and was released pending trial. Rivas-Jordan did not appear at his trial on May 5. Judge Eric John Nee issued a bench warrant for his arrest. That outstanding warrant was served when Rivas-Jordan was arrested for the alleged June 13 stabbing.

One victim injured in Calverton shooting

One person was seriously injured in a daytime shooting in Calverton yesterday, Montgomery County police report. Officers were dispatched to the unit block of Hunters Gate Court at 1:12 PM yesterday, June 19, 2025. That is a townhome community across the street from the Orchard Center shopping center. Officers found an adult male suffering from "serious injuries," but police did not specify that the injuries were gunshot wounds, as they do in other cases. One suspect was taken into custody, and police say they believe this was an "isolated incident." However, their investigation is ongoing.

These dogs are up for adoption today in Silver Spring (Photos)

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue will be holding a dog adoption event this afternoon, Sunday, March 23, 2025, in Silver Spring. All of the dogs pictured here will be available to adopt (a few are contingent upon volunteers giving them a ride over, as noted below). There will also be some cats to adopt, as well. The event will be held at the PetSmart at 12020 Cherry Hill Road at the Orchard Center in Calverton from 12:00 to 3:00 PM.

5 juveniles arrested in Calverton armed robbery

Montgomery County police have arrested five juvenile suspects they allege were involved in the October 4, 2023 armed robbery on Galway Road in the Calverton area of Silver Spring. At 9:34 PM that evening, the male victim was exiting a bus in the 12400 block of Galway when he was grabbed from behind by several people. He was punched multiple times, and one of the suspects then allegedly held a knife to him, and demanded his cellphone and AirPods. The victim complied, and the suspects fled on foot.

Three males, and two females, between the ages of 12 and 15 were arrested by police between November 6 and November 10. All five have now been charged as juveniles with armed robbery and assault. Their cases have been referred to the Department of Juvenile Services.

Armed carjacking in Calverton

Montgomery County police responded to a report of an armed carjacking in Calverton early Friday morning, August 25, 2023. The carjacking was reported in the 2900 block of Calverton Boulevard at 5:43 AM. Montgomery County is on track to exceed the total number of carjackings reported in 2022 this year.

Orchard Center McDonald's to get interior refresh

It's been a year for renovations at the Orchard Center in Calverton. First, Target completed a major renovation. Now it's McDonald's' turn. The exterior of this McDonald's at 12044 Cherry Hill Road is very up-to-date. This renovation, which will be performed in the coming months, will remodel the dining room and counter area.

Assault reported at Silver Spring nursing home

Montgomery County police were called to investigate an assault reported at a Silver Spring nursing home on Wednesday afternoon, February 9, 2022. An individual reported being the victim of a 2nd-degree assault at a nursing home in the 2500 block of Musgrove Road in the Calverton area at 1:00 PM, according to crime data.

Sephora at Kohl's coming soon to Silver Spring

Construction will begin soon on a Sephora at Kohl's beauty section at the Kohl's at 12024 Cherry Hill Road, at the Orchard Center in the Calverton area of Silver Spring. The Sephora shop will replace the existing Kohl's beauty counter area. Maryland was not in the first wave of Sephora at Kohl's locations opened in 2021, so expect to see more of these conversions at Kohl's statewide in the coming year.

Pickpocket strikes at Silver Spring grocery store

Montgomery County police responded to a report of a pickpocket picking pockets at a Silver Spring grocery store yesterday afternoon. The incident took place at a supermarket in the 12000 block of Cherry Hill Road in the Calverton-White Oak area around 5:00 PM, according to crime data. There is an Aldi store on that block..

Car stolen in Calverton area of Silver Spring

A car was reported stolen to Montgomery County police in the Calverton area of Silver Spring on Sunday. The vehicle was taken from a residential parking lot in the 12300 block of Herrington Manor Drive. It was determined the car was stolen some time between 8:00 PM Saturday night, and 8:00 AM on Sunday morning.

Former Staples to become medical imaging center in White Oak

The vacant Staples at 12008 Cherry Hill Road in White Oak has a new tenant. It will now become a medical imaging center. This makes perfect sense, as it is located near many other health-related facilities, most prominently Washington Adventist Hospital at White Oak and Riderwood. Construction is expected to begin soon.

Washington Gas project to affect several streets in Calverton next month

Washington Gas will begin a gas main and lines replacement project in Beltsville next month. Because the project location is right on the Montgomery-Prince George's County line, a few streets in the Calverton area of Montgomery County will be impacted.

The affected streets will be Calverton Boulevard, 2942-3018 Craiglawn Road, 2900-2933 Chapel View Drive, and all of Chapel View Court. Gas should be off no longer than one day for any individual customer, the utility says, and you will receive advance notice of any such service interruptions.

Firearm discharged in parking lot of Fairland 7-Eleven store

Montgomery County police are investigating the latest incident of gunfire in the County, as violent crime continues to surge. Detectives have released a surveillance photo of the man they allege fired multiple rounds into the passenger window of a black sedan parked at the 7-Eleven located at 12257 Tech Road just past White Oak on March 29.

When officers arrived on-scene, they found no sedan, but just the broken glass left behind by the alleged shooting. It appears the suspect was attempting to enter the locked vehicle, and used the gun to break the glass. Detectives report that the suspect had sought a coat hanger from a nearby hotel, telling hotel staff that he had locked himself out of his car.

Anyone with information about this discharge of a firearm or the suspect is asked to call the 3rd District Patrol Investigations Unit at 240-773-6800. Silver Spring teen missing

A 16-year-old girl from the Calverton/Cherry Hill area of Silver Spring is missing, and police are seeking your help in locating her. Ericka Alvarez, 16, hasn't been seen since noon on Monday, December 10, when she drove away from her Herrington Manor Drive home in a grey, 2005 Mercedes-Benz C230. While no one knows where she is, Alvarez has communicated with her family through social media since her disappearance.

Police describe Alvarez as a Latina, 5’ 01” tall and 105 pounds.  She has brown eyes, black hair, and multiple tattoos.  Alvarez was last seen wearing a black shirt, black pants, and black and yellow shoes.

Patricia Fenati launches campaign for District 14 delegate

Patricia Fenati, a resident of Damascus, launched her campaign for the Maryland House of Delegates from District 14 last night at Argyle Country Club. District 14 covers the northeastern area of Montgomery County from Damascus to Burtonsville, and includes Calverton, Colesville, Cloverly, Fairland, Olney, Ashton, Sandy Spring, Brookeville and Laytonsville.

Fenati pledged to focus on ending gerrymandering of voting districts in the state and county, job creation, education, and the environment. She noted that the current district boundaries give some communities in District 14 very little say in the outcome of elections for County Council and the General Assembly. Fenati also supports the transportation plan proposed by Gov. Larry Hogan, which would greatly rely on private, rather than taxpayer, funds to accomplish.

No other Republicans have filed for the District 14 delegate race as of this morning. On the Democratic side, only three candidates have filed - Anne Kaiser, Eric Luedtke, and Pamela Queen.
