Purple Line train at Lyttonsville station (Photos)

Here's a look at the construction progress at the future Purple Line station at Lyttonsville, the light rail line's stop between Chevy Chase Lake and downtown Silver Spring. It's a community with a tremendous history, with residents who demonstrated resiliency over decades of neglect and isolation by Montgomery County government. Construction on the station has advanced so far that we are already able to see the displays of historic Lyttonsville photographs. And we have a bonus here, folks: an actual Purple Line trainset at the station!

Robbery at knifepoint in Lyttonsville

Knives are becoming the new guns in Montgomery County in recent weeks, with a spate of knife robberies, slashings and stabbings. One of the latest took place at an apartment complex in Lyttonsville yesterday afternoon, June 30, 2026. A robbery at knifepoint was reported in the 8800 block of Lanier Drive at 5:00 PM. The Paddington Square apartments are located on that block. This was another example of another recent crime trend in Montgomery County: violent crimes increasingly being perpetrated during daylight hours. Two 2026 trends in one!

Capital Crescent Trail tops list of best urban cycling trails in America

The Washington, D.C.-to-Silver Spring Capital Crescent Trail has received national recognition by Momentum magazine, which just placed it atop its list of 10 Amazing Urban Cycling Trails for Exploring Cities. Starting in Georgetown, the trail winds through Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Lyttonsville before terminating in Silver Spring. The CCT beat out trails in much larger metropolises such as San Francisco and Chicago for the top spot. Momentum correctly noted that the trail route follows the Georgetown Branch of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad, however, trains continued traveling its rails even after the B&O was absorbed by CSX, which ultimately abandoned the line in the 1980s.

Nighttime work ahead for Purple Line in Silver Spring, Lyttonsville, Long Branch

Additional overnight work hours may be needed this summer for the Purple Line light rail project between Bethesda and New Carrollton. The Maryland Transit Administration advises that some work may need to take place between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM, or during the overnight hours. Areas impacted within Montgomery County include Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Lyttonsville, Silver Spring, and Long Branch. Concrete pours in particular may need to occur in the cooler hours after dark. "Hot weather can cause issues while placing concrete due to rapid curing that can occur at higher ambient temperatures," the MTA said in a statement. "Crews will prioritize the noisiest work to the daytime shifts."

Rock Creek Trail closure ahead in Lyttonsville

A section of the Rock Creek Trail around the Purple Line light rail bridge will temporarily close on or about February 14, 2024. The closure is scheduled to last for about four weeks, and a detour will be in place (see map above). This is necessary to rehabilitate Rock Creek and the trail itself from alterations and damage caused by the construction. Work will take place in shifts from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and 5:00 PM to 3:00 AM, as necessary. Crews are working against time, as environmental restrictions will take effect once spring arrives.

Gwendolyn E. Coffield Community Recreation Center to reopen in Lyttonsville

The Gwendolyn E. Coffield Community Recreation Center at 2450 Lyttonsville Road in Lyttonsville will reopen to the public this coming Monday, June 13, 2022. It has been used as an emergency shelter during the pandemic, a loss of a community facility that was highly controversial. The Long Branch Community Recreation Center suffered a similar fate at the expense of residents, who lost access to a building they pay to operate with their tax dollars.

A special Welcome Back Movie Night Festival is scheduled to formally celebrate the reopening. It will be held on Saturday, June 18, from 7 – 10 PM, and include a screening of the film, Encanto. There will be activities for the entire family including music, food, a live Encanto character, Father's Day drum circle, Juneteenth Freedom Day Table, and a "TikTok Dance Booth." The movie screening will begin at dusk, around 8:45 PM.

“The reopening makes it possible for the center to once again be a place for young people, families, and older adults to spend their leisure time,” Montgomery County Recreation Director Robin Riley said in a statement. “We have been working behind the scenes to have a facility that where we can offer high-quality recreation programming for everyone.”

Attempted child abduction in Lyttonsville

A man allegedly attempted to abduct a child in Lyttonsville last Friday. Montgomery County police detectives from the Special Victims Investigations Division say an 8-year-old boy was dropped off by his school bus near the intersection of Lyttonsville Road and Grubb Road around 4:00 PM. He was then approached by a vehicle. A man believed to be around 40 years old told the boy to get into his vehicle, a light-gray 4-door sedan.

When the boy did not follow the command, the man reached out and grabbed the boy's shirt. The boy broke free, and the man - who detectives say had a "dark complexion" and wore black jeans and a gray jacket - showed the boy a firearm in his waistband.

The child ran home, and the police were summoned around 6:20 PM. Officers were unable to locate any witnesses to the incident in the neighborhood. Investigators continue to collect information and the Police Department has increased patrols in the area.  Police are asking anyone with information about this incident or any previous activity that might relate to this incident to please call detectives at 240-773-5400.

Talbot Avenue Bridge 100th birthday celebration set for September 22

A critical transportation link for the historic African-American community of Lyttonsville is turning 100, and a birthday celebration is now planned for Saturday, September 22, 2018 from 2:00-5:00 PM at the Talbot Avenue Bridge. The bridge is located at the end of Talbot Avenue, and connects Lyttonsville with North Woodside in Silver Spring.

Not only is the bridge a classic piece of engineering expertise by the famed Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, but it played a key role in keeping the community connected to the rest of Silver Spring during segregation in Montgomery County.

The birthday program will be headlined by African-American a capella ensemble Jubilee Voices; music by Silver Spring singer-songwriter Lea; a performance of “The Talbot Avenue Bridge” instrumental by Silver Spring resident Jay Elvove; storytelling and remembrances of the bridge’s significance to local residents; children’s activities; and festive food and drink. All activities are free and open to the public.

The program’s rain date is Saturday September 29, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Follow the Talbot Avenue Bridge website for information and weather-related announcements as the date approaches.

Noise wavers requested for Lyttonsville Place Bridge demolition, bridge could close Monday

Noisy days and nights are ahead for those in earshot of the Lyttonsville Place Bridge. Purple Line Transit Constructors has requested temporary noise waivers from Montgomery County related to the highly-controversial destruction of this historic bridge.

The first permit covers demolition noise and the installation of pilings at the bridge location. This work will begin in mid-June, and last for up to six months (yikes). Work hours will be 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday-Friday, and "if necessary," from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturdays.

A second permit is related to the forming and construction of retaining walls. This work will commence in early July, and continue through the end of September. The hours of work for this aspect of the project will be Monday-Saturday, 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM, a clear expansion beyond the legal hours for such work.

Purple Line Transit Partners says the bridge could close on, or about, Monday, June 18, 2018.

Purple Line work scheduled in Lyttonsville this weekend

Just some of the mature forest that
will be felled along the trail
Purple Line Transit Partners says their contractors will be out this Saturday, March 17, 2018 on the Georgetown Branch Trail from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. They'll be engaged in "tree chipping and grinding," a.k.a. clear-cutting mature forest, between Jones Mill Road and Lyttonsville Place. They'll also be violating the Montgomery County noise ordinance in doing so. Such work cannot legally be done before 9:00 AM on weekends, unless they have a noise waiver.
