Kaldi's Social House closing in Silver Spring

Update: June 17, 9:00 AM: After posting an announcement on an auction website clearly stating that Kaldi's would be "shutting its doors and making a complete urgent liquidation," the owner is now telling other media outlets there is merely a renovation, and that Kaldi's will not be closing. Some of my competitors conveniently failed to disclose that Kaldi's posted the announcement it was closing, in their rush to claim I had posted an "incorrect" report. Total hogwash. If Kaldi's is not closing, it is they who were in error announcing they were closing online.

Kaldi's Social House is closing in Silver Spring, according to an auction announcement by the business. The coffee lounge at 918 Silver Spring Avenue is auctioning off its furniture and kitchen equipment in an "urgent liquidation" on Monday, June 19. Items up for bid include a Perlick Draft Beer Dispenser/Kegerator with 4 keg capacity, and 8 Restoration Hardware chairs.

  1. What in the hell?? This place is packed all day, every day. Too much debt from the rooftop bar expansion? Lawsuit pending from Highwood Theater next door re: noise complaints? Owner moving back to Ethiopia? There has to be some sort of explanation. This makes zero sense.

  3. I just spoke with Tsega. This is not accurate. Did you reach him before you posted this? He is not closing.

    1. Tsenga should have been clearer in HIS ad. I'm glad RD included a screencap as you are all going off on him insteaed of Tsenga or whoever posted on Tsenga's behalf.

    2. God, lilkunta has the most annoying comments. You have no idea if he posted the auction language or not. You can't even spell his name right. Shut up and sit down already.

  4. Bethesda Magazine is reporting they're just doing a renovation.

  5. Lordy, someone better tell the auction site not to sell their kitchen equipment.

    1. It's only a fraction of their kitchen and a handful of chairs that they're selling off. It makes sense that if they were closing they'd be getting rid of a whole lot more.

  6. They are NOT closing.

    1. 2:21: Why did they post an ad saying they are closing if they aren't closing? It doesn't say "renovation," it says, "shutting its doors."

  7. They probably should update their auction listing that says they're "urgently closing" :)

RD you are doing great work!

  8. The auction site probably came up the misleading headline. Why didn't Rob call or email the business to confirm? Anyway, one of the many discount furniture stores near me has a "going out of business" sale every six months or so.

  9. I was willing to cut Dyer some slack before, but this update is ridiculous. Talk about "it's everyone's fault but mine!" Did you _ever_ reach out to anyone at Kaldi's? Did you confirm whether or not they are responsible for the wording on the auction site before emphatically accusing them of causing all this? If not, then I'm sorry, you have egg on your face.

    1. Did the other websites _ever_ mention that Kaldi's posted an ad stating they were closing? "If not, then I'm sorry, they have egg on their face."

  10. "Kaldi's posted the announcement it was closing"

Robert, let me guess: you're simply making more assumptions rather than asking the owner if they posted the announcement? One would logically conclude that the auction company writes its own language for the auctions. Why are you so against actually fact-checking your posts (and your pseudo-retractions)? Is it some sort of phobia re: contacting people? If so, might I suggest partnering with an intern who could help w/that sort of stuff?

The restaurant messed up their auction listing, not a big deal.

    2. Sorry, Robert. Just trying to help you be a less shitty blogger. You're embarrassing yourself, both with stories that aren't researched properly and with your childish comments.

  11. So Robert Dyer now comments anonymously on his EastMoCo blog, too?

    There goes the neighborhood. Sad!

    2. "Sock puppet" is familiar language from the resident troll on my Bethesda site. Suspicious! In reality, I'm not a sock puppet, but more like LeBron - the wannabe sites, the developer-funded sites, and the small-and-slightly-failing magazine can't get me out of their head.

"I just feel like it’s great that on the day you’re celebrating your championship, my likeness and my name is in your head. I love that.” - LeBron James

    5. 5:59: It's Hans Riemer who can't get me out of his head, whether it was his brief attempt to ape my hairstyle, or a series of attempts to launch rival websites to mine (starting with BethesdaNow in 2012, which I annihilated in the ratings until it went out of business).

With all the shady endorsements, toady reporters writing puff pieces about him, and Wall Street crook money in his $200000 campaign account, "my likeness and my name are in his head. I love that."

      - LeBron Dyer

    6. What role did Hans Riemer have in launching Bethesda Now in 2012?

And what were the "ratings" for your site vis-a-vis Bethesda Now between 2012 and 2015?

    7. 9:58: He didn't finance it, but he was a major player in bringing it to MoCo with the folks who did. It immediately began promoting him, and he immediately began promoting it.

I crushed BethesdaNow, and the angel investors pulled out and they had to shut it down. Then they did one of those weird deals like in professional sports, where they trade a guy to another team, but the old team pays his salary instead of the new team. Wild stuff.

  15. I dont know whats going on but I am one of their neighbors and the rooftop bar has made life at night MISERABLE!!!!! It is way too loud and they dont care at all about their neighbors. I hope they read this. Some of us also work late and now all you hear is them.

  16. I had a "complete urgent liquidation" after I ate at the McDonalds in Westbard!

  17. No robert. Even if it says closed and shutting doors, that doesn't mean out of business. They have to close and shut doors to renovate you fool. You're just not a good journalist. You didn't bother to TALK to them to confirm this ridiculous statement. Not smart. You are not smart.

    1. 1:39: No, dummy, it not only said shutting their doors (which doesn't mean renovation in the English language), but also added that it was a "COMPLETE LIQUIDATION." To claim that sounds like a renovation and not a closure is to suspend disbelief.

You didn't bother to READ the false announcement the business posted to confirm their ridiculous statement. Not smart. You are not smart.
