Silver Spring construction update: Core apartments (Photos)

The tower crane is up at the construction site of the future Core apartments at 8621 Georgia Avenue, in downtown Silver Spring. Interestingly, the crane was spinning as the winds related to yesterday's snowstorm blew into town. That's exactly what it's designed to do in such conditions. For high winds, the crane is set to be able to rotate with the wind, so as to prevent it from toppling.

Foulger-Pratt and Willco are the development partners on the project.

Core will contain 292 apartments, and has a projected walk score of 95, with its proximity to so many jobs, amenities, restaurants, nightspots and transit in the downtown area. A new Rite-Aid is under construction on the next block, speaking of convenience. The 16-story building will also house about 1500 SF of its own retail/restaurant space.

  1. It's so unfortunate Lee Development Group owns both of the empty adjacent lots. They are the most inept and impotent development group in the region.

  2. I agree with number 1. Lee Development Group also own a couple properties in Aspen Hill, including the abandoned office building behind Home Depot. Lee development lacks the vision, they are interested in bringing Walmart or some easy money big box company. The location in aspen hill could be a magnet and a new downtown-like area if Lee Development pursues a mixed development with residential, doctors offices, shops, etc. there.

  3. I agree with number 1 & 2. Lee has a viable concept to develop those two lots with a hotel and housing or office, but I put my money on it being at least 6-7 years (when the PL opens) before they turn dirt, perhaps even as long as a decade.

  4. Lee Dev. also has plans to redevelop Elizabeth Square, but I'm not holding my breath on that, either. I honestly don't think they've successfully accomplished anything in almost a generation. I wonder what the current generation of Lees do all day, other than polish the silver spoons they inherited.
