Palisades Lounge to open in former Silver Spring paint shop
The vacant Benjamin Moore paint store in downtown Silver Spring has a new tenant. A new nightclub called Palisades Lounge will open at 8211 Georgia Avenue early next year. Owner Abimalek Ayele is a Montgomery County resident.
Damnit. Riemer strikes again. What's that, like the 15th nightlife spot added in downtown Silver Spring during his tenure, Robert? Just wait until the two new breweries open, too. He might hit 20 new spots before the election, at this rate.
I'm not sure what you're smoking to claim that 15 nightspots have opened, and remain open, in downtown Silver Spring since Riemer took office. Certainly, Silver Spring is doing light years better than downtown Bethesda in the nightlife department. It's really the only credible nightlife destination in the County at the moment. But I'm not sure about your math there.
Remember, Hans Riemer is the guy trying desperately to preserve MoCo's caveman-era government liquor monopoly. He has absolutely nothing to do with businesspeople opening businesses. By contrast, his votes to hike taxes and wages, along with the failure of his disastrous nighttime economy inititative, are responsible for businesses closing.
At my count, there are actually 19 nightspots that have opened and remain open since Reimer was elected in 2010, 22 if you count the two new breweries opening in 2018 plus Palisades. (23 if you count Urban Butcher's as-yet-unnamed 2nd venture.) In order:
Fire Station 1, 2010 Pacci's Trattoria, 2011 The Fillmore Silver Spring, 2011 Society Lounge, 2012 Urban Butcher, 2013 Scion, 2013 Kaldi's Social House, 2013 Olivia's View, 2014 La Malinche, 2014 Mix Bar & Grill, 2014 Denizens Brewing Company, 2014 Golf Ultra Lounge, 2015 Sheger Spring Cafe, 2016 Dave & Busters, 2016 Not Your Average Joe's, 2016 Hen Quarter, 2016 Lina's, 2017 iStar Coffee, 2017 Balagger, 2017 Palisades Lounge, 2018 presumed Astrolab, 2018 presumed Parallel World, 2018 presumed As-yet-unnamed Urban Butcher venture, 2018 presumed
And that's just in downtown Silver Spring, as in the 20910. Expand out a bit and you'll find many more.
10:34: Some of those are restaurants as opposed to nightspots. I have expanded out quite a bit, and have been reporting on openings across East MoCo. But as I said above, there's no question Silver Spring has been the bright spot in MoCo nightlife. It hasn't been hit as hard by the disastrous "nighttime economy" debacle as Bethesda and Rockville as a result.
Can you explain your definition of nightspot? Downthread you include places that are happy hour draws, and each place listed above is at least that. What constitutes nightlife? According to the Nighttime Economy Task Force, it is post-6 PM. Do you agree?
Hasn't Rockville been doing a lot better, too, Robert? It's added all sorts of new bars this decade like Gordon Biersch, World of Beer, Finnegan's Wake, Bar Louie, Vibes Hookah Lounge, etc. The only thing it's lost that I can think of is Orange Ball and that place was sleazy as hell.
Ditto for "North Bethesda" f.k.a. Rockville. Obviously they've added all sorts of new places like City Perch, AMP, iPic, Owen's Ordinary, etc.
I honestly don't know how someone could call Rockville/North Bethesda a "debacle" considering how much retail/nightlife has been added even in just the last few years.
12:19: There has definitely been more than one closure in Rockville and North Bethesda. American Tap Room, Timpano, Ted's Diner, Chef Geoff's (borderline nightspot/mainly happy hour draw), Chili's Grill & Bar, Hooters (alcohol violation tragedy, one of few not the Council's fault).
Pike & Rose has been another bright spot, and has become not just a local draw, but - with iPic - a regional one, as well.
Still, is there a place in Rockville that a single 22 year old would go to with the idea of meeting other singles? Not in my opinion. Even in Bethesda, most of those kind of places have closed.
Yet, in the D.C., they have tons of options. Montgomery County is mostly serving married couples, senior citizens or those with chemical imbalances who aren't seeking to hook up.

Plus you have Kaldi's new rooftop bar. Oh, wait, I forgot that Kaldi's is closed, according to Robert. lol.

American Tap Room - Clarendon restaurant closed at about the same time. Rockville Town Square is a Federal Realty property.
ReplyDeleteTed's Diner - DINER, not a "night spot".
Timpano's - Demolished and being replaced by a larger building housing several restaurants. Montrose Crossing is a Federal Realty property.
Chef Geoff's - Downtown DC location closed about the same time. Rockville Town Center, a Federal Realty property.
Chili's - Closed because the site is being redeveloped. Chain is struggling nationwide. Calling this a "night spot" is quite a stretch.
Hooter's - "alcohol violation tragedy." Translation: Customer served too much booze. Drives drunk, involved in fatal crash. Restaurant sued.
Correction: Chef Geoff was on a Lerner property on Rockville Pike, not Rockville Town Square.
Delete@ 5:54 PM - DTSS should thank its lucky stars that there are no moribund Federal Realty properties dragging it down!
