Gaithersburg teen arrested in Wheaton Metro homicide

Montgomery County police have arrested two teenage suspects in relation to the shooting death of another teenager last Thursday, May 18, 2023, in the Wheaton Metro station. Detectives allege Emmanuel Leonard Simmonds, 16, of Gaithersburg was the shooter who killed Tenneson Vaughn Leslie, Jr., 18 of Greenbelt, on the Metro train platform. Simmonds was arrested at his home, and has been charged as an adult with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and possession of a loaded handgun.

The second teen, a 14-year-old male, is being charged as an accessory after the fact in the homicide. His case will be handled through the juvenile justice system, police said Wednesday. Simmonds' bail status was not addressed in the press release.

Wheaton Metro robbery suspects still at large (Photos)

WMATA is downplaying a violent robbery aboard a Metro Red Line train nearing the Wheaton station Sunday afternoon, referring to it merely as a "strong-arm robbery." But these robbery suspects allegedly did more than twist arms.

In reality, around 5:40 PM Sunday, the alleged robbers didn't simply threaten violence or twist the victim's arm. Instead, the four suspects approached a man, and one sat down next to him and demanded the victim's phone. When the victim declined to cooperate, he was savagely beaten with fists.

"Give me that damn phone!!" one said as they beat the man, and also picked his pockets. The four assailants ran off the train at the Wheaton station, and remain at large. Their victim was hospitalized. These attacks happen frequently in the District, but not very often in Montgomery County, making this something that needs to be nipped in the bud.

Don't expect our low-energy County Council to do anything about it; they have yet to comment on any of the gang-related shootings in Wheaton over the last three years.

If you can identify any of these four suspects, Metro Transit Police would like to talk to you. Call them at 301-955-5000, or text MyMTPD, and reference case number #2017-07929.

Arcing insulator at Wheaton Metro station

Update 9:20 AM: Firefighters are leaving the scene. MCFRS spokesperson says the incident is now an "ongoing maintenance issue" for Metro

More evidence that WMATA's "surge" repair gimmick has utterly failed: Firefighters are right now responding to an arcing insulator incident at the Wheaton Metro station, just as they have regularly along the Red Line prior to the "surge."

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer says a WMATA emergency response team is also en route to the scene. Trains are already single-tracking between Wheaton and Forest Glen.

Wheaton Metro shooting now a homicide case

Montgomery County Police responded to a report of "shots fired" at the Wheaton Metro station garage at 7:06 PM Tuesday night. Initially, the station and garage were both closed.

An adult male victim was located on the 3rd level of the parking garage. According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, that victim was transported to the trauma center at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda.

The victim has died, and police are now calling the incident a homicide. Police said they would not release the name of the victim immediately, and are talking to several "persons of interest" regarding the case. No motive has yet been determined in the shooting.

An update from Montgomery County Police is expected after 8:00 AM this morning.
