Navarrette-Reyes had suffered multiple physical traumas in the weeks preceding his death, police say. The only physical abuse either parent has admitted to so far, is Reyes' acknowledgement that she struck Matthew in the mouth four or five days prior to his death.
The Office of the Medical Examiner ruled the incident a homicide, and reported that Navarette-Reyes was dehydrated at the time he was brought to Holy Cross Hospital. This is further evidence of alleged neglect by his parents, police said.
His parents were arrested yesterday, and now face charges of second degree murder, neglect of a minor, and two counts of child abuse.
