Another 17-year-old killed in Long Branch; 2 suspects in custody

Juan Carlos Gutierrez-Hernandez

A shocking series of events this past weekend in the Long Branch area of Silver Spring has left a second 17-year-old dead in as many months in that neighborhood. Montgomery County police detectives even suspect that the two shootings may be related. Last Friday night, September 5, 2025, around 9:46 PM, several people called 911 to report the sound of gunfire in the 700 block of Langley Drive. One person also dialed 911 to report that he had been shot inside Long Branch Local Park.

County police and Maryland National-Capital Park Police converged on the park, and found two males suffering from gunshot wounds. Charly Blayner Vail Lucas, 17, of Silver Spring, tragically was pronounced dead at the scene. A 21-year-old man was transported to a local hospital, where police say he remains in critical condition at this time.

Jhony Steve Rosales Castillo

Jhony Steve Rosales Castillo, 20, and Juan Carlos Gutierrez-Hernandez, 18, both of Silver Spring, were arrested a short time later. They were each charged with two counts of first-degree murder of a minor victim, one count of attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of possession of a firearm under the age of 21. Initially, a judge ordered both of them held without bond. Detectives say the evidence they've collected connects both suspects to both fatal Long Branch shootings.

Montgomery County police again seeking leads as Kathy Beatty cold case reaches 50 yr. milestone

One of the highest-profile and tragic homicide cold cases in Montgomery County history is again getting a fresh look from Montgomery County police detectives. Yesterday marked exactly 50 years to the day that 15-year-old Kathy Beatty was found dying in the woods behind the Aspen Hill Kmart at 14014 Connecticut Avenue by her sister on July 25, 1975. She had been reported missing the previous night.

The story would only grow worse, as she never regained consciousness, and would pass away a week later in the hospital. Detectives determined she had been sexually assaulted, and had been struck in the head with a rock, causing traumatic injury. The case was one that shook parents across Montgomery County in 1975, along with the disappearance of the Lyon sisters in Wheaton only a few months earlier. To mark yesterday's dark anniversary, police released a new podcast to help younger or new residents get up to speed on the case (and help jog the memories of older residents), and issued their latest plea for public assistance in solving the case.

If you were a nearby resident at the time, is there any detail you might have noticed on the night of May 24 to 25, 1975 that you didn't focus on at the time? And even if you are younger, have you heard any stories from acquaintances or relatives who might have talked, as criminals and their associates tend to do over time? Perhaps listening to the podcast might surface such details in your mind. These are just some of the types of leads police need to solve this case, something they promised Kathy Beatty's late mother they would do. One tiny piece of evidence can snowball into the breaking of a case, no matter how cold.

Anyone with information regarding the death of Kathy Beatty is asked to visit the Crime Solvers of Montgomery County website at www.crimesolversmcmd.org and click the “www.p3tips.com” link at the top of the page, or call 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). Callers may remain anonymous. A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspect.

Silver Spring man arrested after alleged fatal punch outside of Bethesda bar

A Silver Spring man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, after a man he allegedly punched outside of a bar in Bethesda later died from his injuries. Montgomery County police say Darrel David Nixon, 31, became involved in a dispute outside of La Catrina Bar & Lounge at 4935 Cordell Avenue early in the morning of February 15, 2025. Surveillance camera footage reviewed by detectives shows Nixon arguing with Morgan Andrew Hippchen Stone, 44, of Bethesda. At one point in the dispute, police allege, Nixon punched Hippchen Stone, who lost consciousness and fell to the ground.

Police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services personnel arrived at the scene at 2:37 AM, and found Hippchen Stone laying in the street, unconscious and unresponsive. He was transported to a local hospital, where he tragically died from his injuries almost a month later, on March 9. On April 22, the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide, caused by blunt force head injuries.

Starting with the surveillance video, detectives developed their investigation, and ultimately identified Nixon as their suspect. He was arrested Tuesday, and was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond.

Montgomery County sets new record for homicides

Montgomery County tied its 1994 homicide record of 34 this week, with the brutal stabbing death of a man in a stairwell at the Shops of Wisconsin in Bethesda. Last night, the County's record was broken with a homicide reported at 6:35 PM in the 19300 block of Circle Gate Drive in Germantown. The record was smashed just as it was revealed that the County police force has shrunk by 56 officers since February 2021. Response times have suffered, and the annual number of police traffic stops plunged from 106,075 in 2019 to only 39,412 in 2020.

Defunding of the police department by the County Council accounts for only 27 of the 56 lost officer positions. The others have resulted from retiring officers not being replaced, and from reduced morale. Perhaps the only relief for County officials who have to own the new record of 35 homicides, is that there are only seven more days in 2021.
