Police investigate shots-fired incident in Silver Spring

Montgomery County police responded to a report of gunfire in the Fairland area of Silver Spring Thursday night, September 24, 2026. Several residents in the area of Ballinger Drive at Ballinger Terrace called 911 at 10:04 PM Thursday, to report sounds of gunshots. Officers found at least one shell casing where a bullet had struck a townhome. No injuries were reported, and the investigation is ongoing.

Knife-wielding suspect tries to enter homes in Silver Spring

Montgomery County police are seeking the public's help in identifying and locating a suspect they say tried to enter several homes in the middle of the night in the Fairland area of Silver Spring on Friday, July 24, 2026. At 4:23 AM, the suspect was captured on doorbell cameras attempting to enter several homes in the 13200 block of Guilford Run Lane. Police allege the suspect was carrying a large knife at the time. 

The suspect is described by police as a Hispanic male, approximately 16 to 20 years of age, with dark hair and a goatee. Silver Spring burglar interrupts dinner by kicking in apartment door

The occupant of an apartment in the Briggs Chaney area of Silver Spring had their dinner rudely interrupted by a burglar yesterday afternoon, June 22, 2026. According to Montgomery County police, an adult male suspect gained entry to an apartment building in the 13800 block of Castle Boulevard, near the Briggs Chaney MarketPlace shopping center. At 4:05 PM Monday, he allegedly kicked in the door of an apartment unit, and stepped inside to find a resident eating dinner. He immediately turned and fled without taking anything. Police have not released a description of the suspect.

Car stolen from condo complex in Silver Spring

Montgomery County police are investigating the theft of a vehicle from a condominium complex in Silver Spring. The vehicle was stolen from the parking lot of the Tanglewood condos in the 13200 block of Conductor Way in the Fairland area. Police believe the vehicle was taken sometime between 8:00 PM Tuesday, and 7:00 AM Wednesday. They did not release a description of the vehicle.

Montgomery County government vehicle stolen in Silver Spring

Even the government of Montgomery County is not immune from being victimized by the County's six-year crime wave. A County government vehicle is among the latest stolen by auto thieves. County police report that a Montgomery County Fire Marshal vehicle was stolen from a parking lot in the 3300 block of Gateshead Manor Way in the Fairland area of Silver Spring. 

The theft was discovered yesterday afternoon, and police believe the vehicle was stolen sometime between 2:30 PM on April 29, 2026 and 3:12 PM Monday. Police did not identify the specific address of the parking lot, but the East County Community Center is located at 3310 Gateshead Manor Way.

Alleged porch pirate arrested in Silver Spring

Montgomery County police arrested a man Tuesday morning in the Fairland area of Silver Spring, after linking him to a series of thefts that occurred over the previous night. Casey Stewart Boston, 36, hometown not disclosed by police, was taken into custody in the 14100 block of Castle Boulevard. Police allege he was in possession of packages stolen from homes, and of property stolen from vehicles in the area. A witness told police they had observed Boston looking into vehicles. Boston was charged with multiple counts of theft and rogue and vagabond, and was released on bond on Wednesday, January 14.

Homicide in Fairland area of Silver Spring

Montgomery County police are investigating a homicide in the Fairland area of Silver Spring. At 9:06 PM Wednesday night, November 19, 2025, K-9 officers were canvassing the 13800 block of Aston Manor Drive, in relation to a nearby shooting case. They discovered the body of Jadyn Mekhi Brown, 20, of Silver Spring. They noticed he appeared to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Brown was declared dead at the scene.

Police personnel had been in that area since 7:54 PM, when they had been dispatched to investigate a report of a shooting in the vicinity of Aston Manor Drive. Officers located a shooting victim in the 3400 block of Robey Terrace. The adult male victim was able to tell police that he had been shot on Aston Manor Drive, and had run to Robey Terrace, where 911 was called. He was transported to a local hospital. Police did not specify his condition, but characterized him as being alert and conscious.

Homicide detectives have not yet definitively connected the two cases. No arrests have been made, and no charges have been filed in connection with either the shooting or the homicide.

Greencastle Elementary School burglarized in Silver Spring

Greencastle Elementary School was burglarized in the Fairland area of Silver Spring on September 27, 2025, Montgomery County police report. In the early morning hours of that day, police allege, a suspect entered the school at 13611 Robey Road, and stole unspecified property. Officers responding to the scene found no evidence of forced entry, suggesting the burglar had a key, or that the school building had been left unsecured overnight.

Strong-arm cart-jacking in Silver Spring

The carjackers of Montgomery County are now turning to seizing golf carts. But the Grand Theft Auto-esque adventures of three juveniles were short-lived after Montgomery County police caught up with them. The three teens allegedly cart-jacked two golf carts in the 13900 block of Castle Boulevard around 4:00 PM on October 29, 2024. One of the adult male victims was assaulted in the process, police say. Officers recovered the golf carts, and arrested two juvenile males aged 16 and 17, and a juvenile female aged 15. All three are residents of Silver Spring, police say. 

The Pit mountain bike area opening this weekend at Fairland Bike Park

Montgomery Parks will officially open a progressive mountain bike skills park within the Fairland Bike Park tomorrow, Saturday, November 5, 2022. The 6.5 acre addition, called The Pit, features rollers, kicker ramps, wall rides, drops, and skinnies. Best of all, you don't even need your own mountain bike - you can borrow one from the park's bikeshare station. Fairland Bike Park is located at the intersection of Greencastle Ridge Terrace and Greencastle Road.

Armed carjacking at Windsor Court apartments in Silver Spring

Montgomery County police were called to the Windsor Court apartments on Castle Boulevard Monday evening, after an armed carjacking was reported there. The carjacking occurred at 6:06 PM, according to crime data.

East County restaurants hit hard by new Montgomery County Covid-19 restrictions as cases, hospitalizations spike

East County restaurants already struggling through the coronavirus pandemic are facing another financial blow, as Covid-19 cases spike in Montgomery County ahead of what is expected to be a difficult winter. Many mom-and-pop restaurants, and even operators of chain businesses, have said they are struggling to turn a profit while surviving month-to-month with various government assistance programs. On Tuesday, the Montgomery County Council unanimously approved tougher Covid-19 restrictions, including the reduction of restaurant capacity to 25% effective yesterday at 5:00 PM.

The new restrictions limit gatherings to 25 people or less. 25% capacity restrictions will also apply to houses of worship, retail stores, museums and galleries, and gyms. Restaurants will now be required to maintain a record of all indoor and outdoor patrons, for at least 30 days, to assist with contact tracing. Information collected must include date, time, name of each patron and contact information.

Loss of indoor dining capacity comes just as plummeting temperatures make outdoor dining much less practical. Whether heaters and tents will in any way reduce that impact will be determined for the first time this winter. We are in uncharted waters in an industry that already has razor-thin profit margins in high-rent, high-tax, high-operating-cost, liquor-monopoly-controlled Montgomery County.

At the same time, there is no doubt the pandemic is taking a turn for the worse as winter approaches, as many had predicted. Maryland hospital beds are currently filled at a higher rate than during the summer coronavirus spike. All County hospitals were under Blue Alert Monday night, and at least one went to a full Red Alert Tuesday, forcing rerouting of emergency patients who require electrocardiogram-monitored beds. Yesterday, Covid-related hospitalizations in America reached a record high.

Indecent exposure in Wheaton, Fairland

Two indecent exposure cases were reported to Montgomery County police in east Montgomery County on Tuesday. The first occurred in a commercial parking lot in the 12200 block of Veirs Mill Road in Wheaton around 1:22 PM. A second indecent exposure incident was reported at a "department/discount store" in the 13800 block of Outlet Drive in Fairland earlier that morning, around 4:52 AM. County police made two arrests for indecent exposure that day, according to arrest records.

Possible break in Fairland home invasion case

Montgomery County detectives appear to be making progress in their investigation of the January 10, 2020 home invasion in the 3000 block of Piano Lane in the Fairland area of Silver Spring. A Howard County man has been arrested and charged with home invasion and conspiracy to commit home invasion, and one count of armed robbery. The home invasion date is listed in court records as having taken place on January 10, 2020. Police have not yet made a public statement regarding the arrest or its context.

Gunfire heard again in Fairland

The mystery shooter who has been heard firing weapons in the Fairland/Burtonsville area at least six times this month may have fired again. Someone reported hearing shots fired in the 13900 block of Castle Boulevard in Fairland to Montgomery County police just after midnight early Monday morning, according to crime data. 

Previous incidents of gunfire have been reported across an area between Silver Spruce Circle in Burtonsville and just north of Briggs Chaney Market Place on Castle Boulevard in Fairland. Casings have been found at some scenes, and one 18-year-old male was wounded in the Wexhall Terrace shooting. Police have not issued any information about this latest April 20 weapons discharge report.

Fairland man goes missing after hospital treatment

A Fairland man is missing, and Montgomery County police are seeking the public's help in locating him. Javian Richards, 22, of the 2300 block of Fairland Road was last seen leaving the Adventist Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville around 2:00 AM Tuesday morning.

Richards was wearing a hospital issued burgundy patient gown when he left the facility. He is described by police as being around 5’11” tall, and weighing about 150 pounds. Richards has brown eyes and short black hair.

A major coronavirus hotspot was identified by Montgomery County in one of its own County-owned liquor stores Friday. An employee at the Montgomery County Liquor store at 4920 Hampden Lane in Bethesda has tested positive for Covid-19, the County liquor department announced in a press release. The County said anyone who shopped at the Hampden Lane liquor store on March 23 or 24 should monitor themselves for coronavirus symptoms.

However, unless the employee only started working March 23, that does not seem like sound advice. The employee tested positive after exhibiting symptoms of Covid-19 on March 25. But a person can be asymptomatic for up to 14 days after being exposed to the coronavirus, so customers could have been at risk of exposure long before March 23.

When you think of how heavily the county government has pushed liquor sales during the coronavirus shutdown, and how many people in downtown Bethesda, Edgemoor, East Bethesda and Chevy Chase likely stocked up at the downtown Bethesda store over the last few weeks, this represents a major risk to the community. The Hampden Lane store has been temporarily closed for sanitizing and deep cleaning.

Montgomery County nursing homes

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services has identified three nursing homes in the county where either residents or staff have tested positive for coronavirus. Three residents at Brighton Gardens on Tuckerman Lane in Bethesda have tested positive for Covid-19, the HHS confirmed. All three are currently hospitalized.

One staff member at Fox Chase nursing home in Silver Spring, and one staff member at the Fairland Center on Fairland Road in Silver Spring also have tested positive. Each is self-quarantining at this time.

The reports on this and the liquor store are among the very few cases where the County has been open with the public on where infected people have worked, shopped or traveled. Such a lack of open information has helped to spread the coronavirus because residents could not avoid places of exposure, and people who were in those places could not self-isolate to protect vulnerable household members and others in the community.

Ride On announced that bus service is being further reduced to essential routes. If your regular bus includes a hospital as a stop, you're in luck, such as the Ride On 23 in Bethesda that goes to Sibley Hospital. If it doesn't, not so much. Hogan announces partnership to find

Johns Hopkins

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced a major research initiative the state is undertaking in partnership with Johns Hopkins Medicine and Bloomberg Philanthropies. The research will center around blood plasma samples from patients who have recovered from Covid-19, and attempt to find a treatment for the disease, if not a vaccine. Bloomberg is donating $3 million, and the state is contributing $1 million.

MedStar opens coronavirus

MedStar has opened a coronavirus testing site in Bethesda, as predicted by Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich earlier this week. However, rather than using the White Flint Mall site Elrich suggested, MedStar has opened it at the Pauline Betz Addie Tennis Center, located at 7801 Democracy Boulevard. Before you jump in your car, though, you must have a referral from a MedStar physician who will approve you as a candidate for testing.

Arlington affordable housing organization goes regional with Silver Spring acquistion

The Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing, a non-profit providing affordable living for residents of that Northern Virginia county for 30 years, has announced it will become a regional organization. Its first move in that direction is its acquisition of Snowden's Ridge, a 13-building Section 8 housing complex developed in 1980 on Harlequin Terrace, in the Fairland area of Silver Spring.

APAH was able to acquire the complex through a financing partnership with Montgomery County and Atlantic Union Bank. They purchased the property for $18.5 million with an acquisition loan from the bank, and a $2.75 million loan from Montgomery County. The deal will ensure the current residents will be able to continue to afford to live there.

County Executive Marc Elrich lauded the deal in a statement yesterday. “Snowden Ridge is home to workers, seniors and families who are an essential part of our community," Elrich said. We were happy to work with APAH to ensure that these families can stay in their homes – and in Montgomery County.”

APAH says it plans to renovate the property, and institute programs to benefit the residents. One of the strongest points of Snowden's Ridge is that the majority of its units are 3-bedroom. Such larger units are the most-needed for families who require affordable housing, and are the least often built by developers as MPDUs.

Police investigate serious accident in Fairland

Montgomery County police are investigating a serious accident that occurred in the Fairland area of Silver Spring last night at 6:47 PM. A 1998 Toyota Corolla was traveling west on Sheffield Manor Drive when the driver lost control and crashed into a parked Freightliner truck on the side of the road.

The driver of the Corolla, Jaime Rodrigo Herrera, 22, of Renfrew Road in Silver Spring, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this collision. Detectives are attempting to determine what caused the driver to lose control. Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.

More mysterious shots fired at vehicles in Fairland

Another bizarre shooting has taken place in the Fairland area in the same month, and Montgomery County police are investigating. First a man shot out a car window at a Fairland-area 7-Eleven store on March 29. Now detectives are looking into a second barrage of gunfire that took place around 11:50 PM on Friday, April 19 in the 12300 block of Featherwood Drive.

Police responded after 911 calls reporting shots fired on the quiet residential street. Officers arrived on-scene to find several spent shell casings along the street. They also noticed that several vehicles had been struck by gunfire. No injuries in either shooting incident have been reported so far.
