A Silver Spring man is behind bars after allegedly attacking several people, and several vehicles, with a machete at a busy shopping center Sunday. Maikol Darinson Vicente Gomez, 24, attempted to strike at least three people with a machete at a shopping plaza at the corner of Tech Road and Broadbirch Drive around 5:42 PM, police say. When Montgomery County police officers arrived at the scene, Gomez attempted to flee on foot, but allegedly used his machete to strike several vehicles as he ran.
Gomez tripped and fell, dropping his machete in the process, police say. He was taken into custody without incident, and officers secured the machete as evidence. Interviews with the victims indicated that the attacks were random in nature. No injuries were reported.
Gomez has been charged with three counts of first-degree assault and second-degree assault, two counts of vandalism, resisting arrest, and related charges. He is being held without bond.
