Car thieves had more than fireworks on their minds in downtown Silver Spring yesterday. Montgomery County police responded to two armed carjackings on the Independence Day holiday. The first was reported in the parking lot of an apartment building in the 1700 block of East-West Highway at 12:39 AM. A little over five hours later, police were called to the scene of a second carjacking in a County-owned parking garage in the 900 block of Silver Spring Avenue.
