Roadside Development has unveiled the sketch plan proposal for its planned redevelopment of two downtown Silver Spring properties, 8676 Georgia Avenue and 8601 Cameron Street. It also revealed how it plans to preserve the historic Tastee Diner car, by incorporating it into the new high-rise that will unite the two parcels. The mixed-use building would include up to 525 residential units, and up to 25000-square-feet of retail or commercial space. Current zoning for the site allows a height of up to 300' or thirty stories.

One of the matters sure to gain public attention is the fate of the now-vacant Tastee Diner. The plan reveals that the redevelopment will retain the historic north, east and west facades of the diner car, and its stainless steel canopy. Its glass block base, however, will be replaced with stone.
Roadside anticipates a fall public hearing on the sketch and preliminary plans for the project before the Montgomery County Planning Board. Should those be approved, a public hearing and approval/denial of the site plan would be on track for spring or summer 2024. A required, presubmittal public meeting on the sketch and preliminary plans will be held via Zoom tonight, May 16, 2023 at 7:00 PM.
