Prime Beer & Wine burglarized in Silver Spring

Montgomery County police responded to a report of a burglary at Prime Beer & Wine at 12841 New Hampshire Avenue at the Meadowood Shopping Center in Silver Spring in the early morning hours of August 27, 2025. Officers arriving at the scene found evidence of forced entry at the store. They determined that money and merchandise had been stolen from the business.

Police describe the suspects only as two males, one Black, and the other of unspecified race. If you have any information about this incident, or can identify either of the suspects, call police at (301) 279-8000.

Strong-arm robbery in Colesville

It's been a rough week on New Hampshire Avenue. The criminal activity continued Thursday afternoon, July 3, 2025. Montgomery County police responded to a report of a strong-arm robbery at 1:59 PM. It took place at an ATM machine in the 13300 block of New Hampshire.

Armed carjacking at Silver Spring gas station

The carjacking was reported at a gas station in the 13300 block of New Hampshire Avenue at 3:14 AM Sunday. That is in the Colesville area near Randolph Road. 3:00 AM is a dangerous time to fill up in Montgomery County today!

Colesville Park & Ride Lot could lose 14 spaces to EV chargers

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation has proposed replacing 14 parking spaces at the Colesville Park & Ride commuter parking lot at 13504 New Hampshire Avenue with a bank of 4 electric vehicle chargers. An unidentified private company would install the chargers, in partnership with MCDOT. The lot currently has 190 parking spaces. MCDOT will hold a virtual public hearing on the proposal on April 15, 2025 at 2:00 PM.

Silver Spring museum adds Evans AutoRailer to collection

The National Capital Trolley Museum, located at 1313 Bonifant Road in the Colesville area of Silver Spring, has added another rare vehicle to its collection. A 1936 Evans AutoRailer that was used locally by the Arlington & Fairfax Railway during the late 1930s is now on display. The vehicle was unique in that it could travel on the road as a bus, or on the rails as a passenger car. 

“We are thrilled to add Arlington and Fairfax #109 to our collection,” National Capital Trolley Museum Executive Director Eric Madison said in a statement yesterday. “This vehicle not only adds an exciting new dimension to our exhibits, but it also highlights the innovation and adaptability of transportation solutions that were developed during the mid-1930s. We invite all enthusiasts, families, and history buffs to visit and explore this fascinating piece of automotive and railway history.”

Colesville McDonald's to "McDouble" drive-thru

The McDonald's at 504 E. Randolph Road in Colesville is going to "McDouble" the size of its drive-thru. Currently, the fast food restaurant has a single drive-thru lane. The franchisee's plan is to double that to two lanes in the coming months. McDonald's, like Chick-fil-A, has concluded side-by-side dual drive-thrus are more profitable and efficient. Given that the majority of fast food sales occur at the drive-thru window, maximizing volume and efficiency make perfect sense. 

Owners of All Set Restaurant & Bar buy Fryer's Roadside in Silver Spring

Chef Ed Reavis and Jennifer Meltzer, owners of All Set Restaurant & Bar in downtown Silver Spring, announced Monday that they have purchased Fryer's Roadside at 12830 New Hampshire Avenue. The sale closed Saturday, September 17, according to a press release from the partners. They plan to temporarily close Fryer's, and reopen the fried chicken restaurant later this fall. This is Reavis and Meltzer's third venture, joining All Set and Money Muscle BBQ. 

Colesville has the cheapest gas in East MoCo at the moment

The price of a regular gallon of gas has exploded at the Exxon at 7975 Old Georgetown Road in downtown Bethesda this week. This past Saturday, drivers were paying $4.99 a gallon, and $5.00 was the new normal by Sunday. As of last night, however, a gallon of regular was already up to $5.29, a full 30 cent increase in five days.

As with last weekend, significantly lower prices can be found elsewhere in Montgomery County. Marathon at 5143 River Road in Bethesda was "just" $4.62-a-gallon yesterday, according to gas pricing app Gas Buddy. Liberty and Sunoco on that same stretch of River Road were at $4.69, which was the average price of gas along there on Sunday. Liberty stations in downtown Bethesda are selling regular for $4.99 a gallon this morning, the same price as last Sunday.

The cheapest gas in Montgomery County as of last night was at the Sunoco at 19235 Frederick Road in Germantown, at $4.40. It was two cents more a gallon at another Germantown Sunoco at 18701 Liberty Mill Road. It was $4.43 at Citgo at 14300 New Hampshire Avenue in Colesville, and $4.45 at Liberty at 5400 Randolph Road in Rockville. You'll pay a penny more at the other Rockville Liberty, located at 1900 Rockville Pike.

Gas was about 11 cents cheaper in Germantown last Sunday, and 20 cents cheaper in Rockville. For the masochist on the highways and byways, there's the Exxon at 6729 Goldsboro Road in Glen Echo, at $5.39.

Sweet Block coming to Silver Spring

Sweet Block, a tropical chamoy candy shop specializing in enchilados, is coming to Silver Spring. It will be at 24-B Vital Way in the Vital Way Retail Center in Colesville. The sign is already installed above the storefront, and you can check out some of their products on the Sweet Block website.

2 power outages in Colesville

Some Colesville residents are waking up in the dark this morning. There are two power outages in the neighborhood around Meadowood Park. Pepco says it has a crew on the site of one south of the park, and that power will be restored there by 11:00 AM. A second, smaller outage will be restored by noon, the utility reports.

High winds cause power outages in Silver Spring, Wheaton, Kensington, Colesville, Kemp MIll

Hundreds of Pepco customers in eastern Montgomery County are without power as gusty winds buffet the DC metro area. High winds with gusts into the 50 MPH range are possible through early Saturday morning.

The largest power outage is in the area around Wheaton Regional Park, where 302 customers are in the dark at this hour. Pepco estimates power will be restored there by 9:00 PM tonight.  Less than five customers are currently impacted by an outage in the Kemp Mill neighborhood. Similar small-scale outages are currently being reported in Kensington, the Goodacre Knolls/Long Branch area of Silver Spring, and Colesville.

Armed robbery in Colesville neighborhood

Montgomery County police responded to a report of an armed robbery in the Colesville area of Silver Spring Thursday night. The robbery was reported in the 13000 block of Morningside Lane around 10:57 PM. According to crime data, a gun was the weapon employed in the robbery.

Colesville gas station for sale

You could be the owner of the "last gas" before the ICC coming out of downtown Silver Spring. All you have to do is buy this gas station at 13455 New Hampshire Avenue in Colesville. Currently leased to Giant through 2025, the station is also just north of the busy New Hampshire-Randolph Road intersection, on a major east-west route. The asking price is $2,820,000, according to the online sales listing.

Nighttime paving work on New Hampshire Ave. in Colesville

New Hampshire Avenue will be milled and repaved by the new Gracious Retirement Living development on October 17 and 18, 2019. This is in the Colesville area of Silver Spring north of Notley Road and south of the ICC. The work will be performed overnight, between the hours of 9:00 PM and 7:00 AM, to avoid rush hour traffic disruption.

Fidel's Restaurant opening in Silver Spring

Fidel's Restaurant is coming to 13439 New Hampshire Avenue, in the Colesville area of Silver Spring. The specialty of Fidel's is charcoal chicken. Sounds like a nice addition to this commercial strip.

19-story cell tower proposed for Good Hope Road in Silver Spring

AT&T is proposing to construct and operate a 189' tall cell tower at 14860 Good Hope Road in Silver Spring. In addition to the tower, AT&T plans to also build a structure at ground level to house equipment, and an access road from Good Hope Road to the interior of the property. The property is a wooded lot between Briggs Chaney Road and Windmill Lane, and behind homes on Lear Lane and Goth Lane.

Colesville man missing

Montgomery County police are seeking the public's help in locating a missing man from the Colesville area of Silver Spring. Ton Chi Huynh, 29, hasn't been seen since noon on Friday, May 31, when he drove away from his Appleby Court home in his 2010 black Honda Civic sporting plates with Maryland tag number 3DH3107.  His family has been unable to contact him since.

Huynh is described by police as an Asian male, 5’ 7” tall and weighing 180 pounds. He has brown eyes and black hair.

Good Hope teen missing

A teenage resident of the Good Hope area of Silver Spring is missing, and Montgomery County police are seeking the public's help in locating her. Crystal Chagala, 15, of the 1400 block of Farmcrest Way, has been reported as missing by her family. 

Chagala is described by detectives as a Latina, 4’08” tall, and weighing 110 pounds. She has brown eyes and black hair.  Chagala was wearing a winter coat over a black shirt, black jeans, and black Vans tennis shoes when she was last seen, although police have not disclosed on what date that was.

Colesville man arrested after 5-hour police standoff

A Colesville man who allegedly beat his 72-year-old grandfather with his fists and a dining room chair, has been arrested after a 5-hour standoff. Jalen Christopher Marshall, 25, of the 13500 block of Montvale Drive barricaded himself in his home with furniture police said. The standoff lasted from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM yesterday, when officers finally forced their way into the home.

Inside, police recovered a weapons stash that included a sword, a replica long gun, and the machete Marshall reportedly brandished toward his grandfather when the senior finally escaped the home.

Marshall was transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, and charged with first-degree and second-degree assault. His grandfather was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Washington Gas project on Sherwood Forest Drive to begin next week

A major Washington Gas project in the Colesville area may cause some significant inconveniences and noise along Sherwood Forest Drive, starting as soon as September 4, 2018. The utility is describing the project as a system upgrade, which will enhance their ability to inspect the infrastructure along this street. In real terms, there will be construction in and near the street, in the vicinity of 13304 Sherwood Forest Drive.

The project is expected to take five weeks to complete. Work will occur between 7:00 AM and 5:30 PM, Monday through Saturday. Work will be performed around the clock for a three-day period, tentatively scheduled for September 25, 26, and 28, when crews will work 24-hours-a-day to install a new valve. All work is subject to weather disruption, and the schedule may change accordingly.

Sherwood Forest Drive will be partially closed with concrete barriers throughout the five weeks of work. Residents will still have access to their homes at all times. Stock up on earplugs now.
